Jiah Khan (born Nafisa Rizvi Khan, 20 February 1988 3 June 2013) was an American born British Indian actress, model and singer who appeared in Bollywood films.[1] She made her film debut in the 2007 film Ram Gopal Verma's Nishabd for which she was nominated for Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. She was later noted for portraying modern, independent women in Ghajini which was the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2008. Her performance in the latter earned her significant acclaim. She last appeared in Sajid Khan's directional film Housefull which was her second highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2010.[2]
On 4 June 2013, she was found dead in her apartment in her residence in the Sagar Sangeet building in Juhu, Mumbai after hanging herself.
Five days after a sessions court rejected the bail application of Sooraj Pancholi (22), his lawyers on Wednesday moved the Bombay High Court challenging the lower court's order.
Sooraj was arrested on June 10 for allegedly abetting the suicide of his girlfriend actor Jiah Khan. Sooraj is the son of actors Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab.
Observing that the FIR and investigation papers clearly indicated that the victim was continuously subjected to ill-treatment by Sooraj, the sessions court had rejected his application on June 21.
However, Sooraj's lawyers Ashok Mundergi and Shrikant Shivde today challenged the order claiming that the Juhu police had initially, on June 3, filed an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and Sooraj was implicated in the case only after a week.
Calling it an "after thought", the lawyers have pointed out that Sooraj's arrest was based on undated letters that surfaced a few days after Khan's death. The letter was found by Khan's mother Rabiya and handed over to the police.
In a six-page undated letter allegedly written by Khan, which the police is using as a dying declaration to charge Sooraj with abetment of suicide, the actor has allegedly spoken of torture and an abortion. However, the letter does not mention when the abortion or abuse took place, and neither attributes any of these specifically to Sooraj, the lawyers have pointed out.
Although the sessions court rejected Sooraj's bail application, it pointed out that it was difficult to confirm the authenticity of the letter at this stage. Sooraj's defence lawyers contend that the handwriting in the letter and Khan's signature were different. The High Court will hear the application on July 5.
Rumors reported several days ago that Bollywood actress Jiah Khan had traces of alcohol in her bloodstream at the time she committed suicide have been confirmed by a source within the Mumbai police department. If the case can be made that Khan was intoxicated when she hung herself, it would take away from the argument that ex-boyfriend Suraj Pancholi was responsible by abetting her suicide. Pancholi could still have had an impact on her decision, but the prescense of alcohol would suggest Khan's mind was not stable at the time of the act.

MK Malve, the director of the Kalina Forensics Laboratory, has refused to give any details from the report he submitted regarding Khan's death. However a source indicated that there were in fact traces of alcohol, although no numbers were given to suggest how much.
If the rumor were to prove true, it could cast a shadow on the character of Khan, which would take away from the argument her family is making against Pancholi. Khan left a lengthy suicide note addressed to an unnamed subject, that accuses said subject of abuse, rape, and also alleges that Khan received an abortion. Khan's mother Rabia told police that the actress had complained to her of abuse and that she had signs of abuse on her face at the time of her death. The autopsy released nearly a month ago established that Khan showed no sign of physical abuse, but police did obtain records from a Mumbai hospital that confirmed the actress did undergo an abortion procedure.
Pancholi was held in prison for nearly a month without bail because police believed his freedom would endanger the investigation. A Mumbai court struck down the arguments of the police and allowed Pancholi to be freed on bail.
