People need to look at the bigger picture. There is extreme inflation in Turkey. The last thing Erdogan can afford is a war, sanctions and political isolation.

But his problem is also the elections next year. Also,Erdogan has trapped himself with this nationalistic rhetoric. First he wanted to please the masses and his parliamentary partner,Bahceli but now he can't back down. Because the opposition leaders like Kilicdaroglu and Aksener,mock him for talking big. Also,he doesn't want to let Cyprus drill. They've found a considerable amount of gas in the Cypriot EEZ. Erdogan and Cavusoglu demand that Cyprus shares it or doesn't drill at all. Grabbing part of that and exploring the Greek EEZ south and east of Crete,that could give him a revenue boost in the future.

Even if he doesn't find anything,he'll still boost his popularity a bit by presenting himself as the fearless leader who dares go where he wants and do what he wants.

I think Erdogan is smart to start his ambition now. WIth EU focus on Ukraine. Who cares about Greece and Libya? EU has no way to fight 2 way front. I can forsee Turkey gain what they want during this period. Unless Greece are willing to start war, no way it can stop Turkey.
