TNN | Updated: Dec 16, 2017, 07:48 IST

  • No “shaheed” in the Army or police, ministries of defence and home said.
  • This came in response to an RTI query who insisted on knowing the exact definition of “shaheed”.

NEW DELHI: There are no "shaheed" in the Army or police; instead, the terms used are "battle casualty" or "operations casualty", the ministries of defence and home have informed the central information commission in response to an RTI query.

Besides wanting to know from the home ministry the exact definition of "shaheed" as per the law and the Constitution, the applicant, Vidyasagar Singh, also sought information on which Acts of law ensured restrictions on its misuse and penalty for violation.

In his order, information commissioner Yashovardhan Azad quoted from submissions and said there was no scope for misuse since the decision to declare cases of "battle casualty" and "ops" was taken after the report of a court of inquiry.

Wait so now they wanna include the word "shaheed" for their soldiers? I thought Arabic words were a big no no. Remember how much crap Justin Trudeau got from Indians for saying Diwali Mubarak or something. Go find some other non Arabic word for Shaheed.

Indians don't have the concept of Shaheed they believe in Punar Janam. I am waiting that when will be Hanuman born again he has been dead for so long.

Rawan got his punar janam

He's boss of Iran.

There is no Shaheed in army as This has Islamic connotation to it it's better to be called a casualty than Shaheed and govt did right thing to clear this out.

Coincidentally the words Martyr and Shaheed both mean 'witness'

There should be no concept of shaheed too in the indian armed forces.. The afterlife rewards a shaheed get make it easier for a person to sacrifice his life and it will also make it easier for the family to cope with the news as they believe the deceased is now in a better place but it should not happen in indian armed forces. Every indian soldier need to be aware that whatever he is doing today will echo till eternity for the indian civilization so he doesn't need a sedate to meet his end.

"Witness" seems to be a common theme.
Martyr and Shaheed both mean Witness.
My mothertongue uses the term "rakthasakshi" which literally translates to "Blood Witness".

But formal Sanskrit uses "hutatma" which means "sacrificed soul".

All these should be limited to public use and government documents shouldn't be corrupted with emotional terms.

(Veeramrityu is of course another term, but used a little differently.)

Shaheed is not a word it is a description of an act for a certain cause. It is necessary to be a Shaheed you have to be fighting a Munafiq, Kafir or an oppressor. It would be very hard to add this whole act in Indian Gov texts, If they some how manage to add this there would not be any one claiming the title on correct definition.
