ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked countries part of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline to expedite construction to keep costs low.

While addressing a meeting on the project at the PM House on Wednesday, the prime minister said that the project was important for all countries in the region, and Pakistan is keen that it is expedited.

He emphasised that the states concerned should take all steps necessary to start the project as soon as possible since its cost would only increase with the passage of time.

“We have pinned lots of hopes with this project and want it completed as soon as possible,” a statement released from the PM House read.

TAPI is a 1,680km long pipeline project with design capacity to supply 3.2 billion cubic feet of natural gas per annum (Bcfd) from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.

Director, State Agency for Management & Use of Hydrocarbon Resources in Turkmenistan Yagshgeldi Kakayev, Afghan Minister for Mines and Petroleum Daoudshah Saba, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas, India Dharmendra Pradhan and DG Asian Development Bank Manila, Philippines Klaus Gerhaeusser, among others attended the meeting.

The visiting ministers of member countries also shared their views, calling it a win-win project for all the countries. The meeting agreed that a Consortium leader would be finalised soon.

Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline is already built on Iranian side and Iran was offering $500 million loan to finish Pakistan side if gas pipeline. It is much better option but Gunja cannot do anything without getting approval from Saudia.

Iran - Pakistan pipeline will be end of pak Saudi relations. Even they will angry if pak doesnt allow them to hurt bird. Strange foreign policy.

If pakistan was not willing for IP line then why did iran constructed the pipe in their part ?

The reason might be that they can still Connect the Pipeline with Chabahar port if in case its not Connected to Pakistan. So for them the construction of Pipeline could fulfill one among Two purpose.
1. Connect to Pakistan as Planned
2. If First Option Doesnt Work then Connect the Pipeline to Chabahar Port to Evade any Potential Blockade of Irani Ports in Persian Gulf.

It's been discussed to death now that unless the sanctions on Iran are not lifted, Pakistan cannot make monetary transactions with Iran. But such a comment can always be expected from a person who opened a thread about three ministers going to Davos for WEF without even reading the news -or suffers from a really bad understanding of english- whichever the case maybe.

China, India and Turkey buy Iranian gas and oil without any sanctions !! The three minister which caused petroluim crisis in Pakistan were rewarded with luxury trip to Switzerland on excuse of Davos conferenece !! Lame excuses from people who accuse others of bad English but they themselves have bad political understanding !

It has been told repeatedly that India and China purchase oil from Iran and pay Iran.

Funny that India and China can trade with Iran while Pakistan, a neighbour of Iran can not.

Maybe Nawaz should start visiting countries involved in TAPI project instead of going to US and UK every month.

Pakistan also purchases electricity from Iran but pays through Bartering wheat. Likewise Asian countries use net settlement mechanism using Asian Clearing Union (ACU) e.g. If India Owes Iran , Iran Owes China, Iran's payable can be set off against Iran's receivables from India and thus net settlement occurs. However, this system is restricted and just like barter.

Edit:
China buys Iranian Oil and pays back in Chinese Yuan (Not in $,Euro or Yen), So effectively Iran accepts Chinese Currency to hold in its reserves
BBC News - China buying oil from Iran with yuan
According to the FT report, China has been providing the currency to Iran via Russian banks rather than its own domestic banks.
However, Chinese are smart and don't use their own banks to do so because doing so would put their international trade financing in jeopardy if US/EU black list them but rather use Russian banks to do so.
Similar might be the case with India where Central Bank of Iran might be piling up India Rupee reserves as consideration of Oil payment.
