Navy personnel begin training on Admiral Gorshkov - Brahmand.com

With the Navy set to induct aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov by next year, the first batch of Navy personnel have begun training on the refurbished vessel in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"The first group of 152 sailors and officers have started their training on-board INS Vikramaditya in Russia.

The training comprises four months of theory and almost a similar period of practical exercises on the ship," naval spokesperson told PTI here Thursday.

The group comprises sailors and officers from technical branches of the Navy who will train on the Gorshkov christened as INS Vikramaditya. The ship will have a total crew of 1400 people.

"The training is being conducted by Russian trainers and instructors. More such batches from different branches of naval operations will undergo similar period of training in the coming months," the officer said.

He said the training would be over "well in time" to ensure scheduled induction of the carrier in the Navy by 2012.

The Navy has already inducted the MiG-29K carrier borne fighter aircraft at its airbase in Goa and has plans to induct 45 of them.

It is also in the process of creating a Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) there on which the pilots will take off and land to simulate flying operations at sea.

The deal to purchase the 45,000 tonne Kiev class carrier was signed between India and Russia in 2004 at USD 974 million along with 16 MiG-29K naval fighters for USD 526 million.

However, the original delivery schedule of December 2008 went for a toss after the shipyard made a huge claim of an additional USD 1.5 billion for the refit project and went slow on the work in 2007 and hiked it again to USD 2.7 billion in 2009.

Last year, the two sides resolved the issue after long negotiations and settled on a final price of USD 2.3 billion for the warship.

Why can't the IN train them?we have had carriers for a long time but why should we send the sailors to Russia for training?

You need experience for that

Most of these guys are the complement of Engineering and Electrical Officers and Seamen. The machinery on this ship is different from other aircraft carriers that India has operated. The Air-Crew and Navigational staff will have to spend far less time there during handing over/induction.

Finally it looks like Admiral Gorshkov is coming to India, Indian were waiting for this moment for long. Training is very important for navy personnel. I think Gorshkov will give slight edge to Indian navy then others.

Navy preparing for takeover of Vikramaditya

NEW DELHI: The Navy has started preparations to take charge of aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya (Admiral Gorshkov) from Russia, with the first batch of officers and sailors having commenced training there ahead of its induction next year.

The Navy has sent a 152-member crew for training on the 45,000-tonne aircraft carrier in St. Petersburg, Russia. The warship is to be delivered by December next.

The crew, which reached for training some three weeks ago, consists mainly of technical and warship personnel, Navy spokesman Commander P.V.S. Satish said here on Thursday.

The crew was imparted Russian language skills. The ship would have a crew of 1,400 members, all of them would be trained.

Earlier, the Navy began a shore-based test facility in Goa to train the naval aviators who would eventually fly the MiG29-K fighter aircraft that would be operated from INS Vikramaditya.

India paid $974 million for the aircraft carrier in 2004 and another $526 million for 16 MiG-29K fighter aircraft to be operated in a Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) configuration. While Russia has delivered the fighter jets to India, the Navy is planning to place an additional order for 29 MiG-29K.

Initially, the Navy sent some aviators to the U.S. and Russia to train them in STOBAR as the country did not have any facility.

Delay in delivery

The INS Vikramaditya project, sanctioned in January 2004 envisaged delivery of the warship in August 2008 but it got delayed over price with Russia demanding $2.9 billion to carry out repair and re-equipping for converting the cruiser into an aircraft carrier.
