The Indian Navy seems to be sceptical of using nuclear energy for its aricraft carriers, though it plans to commission the nuclear-powered submarine INS Arihant in December.

“Installing nuclear technology on a ship involves a huge design issue and high cost,” Admiral Nirmal Verma, the Chief of Naval Staff, told DC after inaugurating the India International Regatta here.

“We have restricted the use of nuclear technology to submarines, where it helps to create endurance under water,” he said.

Admiral Verma said the indigenously built warship INS Satpura was commissioned two months ago, while the refurbished Admiral Gorshkov, renamed INS Vikramaditya, would join the navy by December 2012.

“The three additional stealth frigates that are being built in Russia will reach us in the next 18 months,” he said.

On piracy off the coast of Somalia, Admiral Verma said the Indian Navy is part of the multinational naval task force set up to counter the threat.

“There is a tremendous exchange of information between all navies through a private computer network. About 15 countries, including France, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, China and India, are involved in this effort,” he said. Since 2008, an Indian ship has been permanently assigned to patrol the area.

“The Somalia coast comes within 200 to 300 miles of Lakshdweep. So we are carrying out massive search operations to keep the waters safe,” he said.

Earlier, the Chief of Naval Staff unveiled an Optimist boat to mark the official launch of the India International Regatta in Chennai and had called on TN Governor K. Rosaiah.

More than 100 sailors from 10 countries, including hosts India, Qatar, Ireland, Slovenia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Myanmar and Indonesia, are taking part in the regatta that will end on October 9.

The regatta is organised by the Chennai Sailing Academy under the aegis of the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association.

The Commodore of the TN Sailing Association, Ashok Thakkar, said sailing is poised for growth in the state with government planning to build an international class marina.

Right now maybe not. Once IAC-1 and Vikramditya are inducted and by ~2017-8 I think IN will change their tune. And by then Indian economy will have grown A LOT and IN will have much more $$$. Never say never, A few decades ago I doubt many thought IN would soon be inducting 2 N-subs, one INDIAN!

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

People assume that nuclear powered Aircraft Carrier is somehow superior. It is superior when it comes to power projection. For India, threats are limited to china. A conventional carrier would be more than sufficient to complete our objectives and to preserve our interests in the region.

Not to mention, the chinese still has no carrier, while we do.

it's a very expensive proposition....."sail away" costs and maintenance costs withstanding

one need not to limit its enemy profile as one never knows whom it will be fighting in future.USA-PAK,USA-IRAQ,USA-Iran are live examples friends turning foes.So one need to have all weapons at his disposal whether one fights or not.

Of what benefit is an aircraft carrier other than to project power? I mean, India has plenty of land airfields near China and Pakistan. So, why have an aircraft carrier in the first place if you are not going to use it to lurk far away from your land area to perform some military mission, such as protecting India's sea lanes at a choke point, providing air cover for a Special Ops mission or making your presence felt in a trouble spot, like the West Philippine Sea?

Absolutely wrong notion...One needs to prepare as per the threat profile...otherwise lot of resources gets wasted over nothing...it is easy to say we should be prepared then being prepared....Lot of resources and money will go down the drain and you will end up with weapons that you will never use...

India always had Threat profile from USA and NATO.Did India prepared for it or was it not able to do so?What hapeened to Hindi-chini bhai bhai thing in 1962 after singing 1 decade of panchsheel tune?

.
unless our aircraft carriers are capable of launching ballistic missiles they should not be nuclear powered only submarines for long range deterrence patrols hiding deep under the ocean shadowing the enemy's waters knowing that any 1st strike would be almost instantly responded too. however i do agree having a nuclear powered aircraft carrier means dominance in waters as you have muscle thousands of kilometers away from your homeland. if our Babu's had more strategic appetite maybe then we could get a N-power aircraft carrier

really?

The point is what is the advantage of Nuclear carrier over conventional one?

.
we do not need nuke powered ac's now.
lets think about them in future.

.
Pouring out our cash for a Nuclear powered Carrier would be very wasteful at this point , with conventional powered carriers we project power comfortably anywhere in the Indian Ocean as long as our Carrier battle group consists of a large number of subs and frigates/destroyers with ASW capabilities.

Nuke powered carriers would be for when we expand beyond the Indian Ocean which is our backyard. If we ever have bases in far off locations , or need to venture beyond Mallacca straits or the Coast of Africa.

.
I think this has more to do with the fact that we are still tweaking the nuclear reactor that powers a submarine. Powering an Aircraft carrier will need a reactor of significantly higher capacity and just proportionally increasing the size, units etc will not help. It will be a whole new design and unless the designs are already in place, one cannot risk designing a carrier powered by it. Since procuring a nuclear reactor for military use is next to impossible in the near future, only if the engines have been designed within India will any plans for a nuclear powered carrier take shape.
