MMRCA Fighter deal bigger: 126 will rise to 260

french President Nicholas Sarkozy may miss signing of the Mirage 2000 upgrade deal with the Indian Air Force (IAF) during his visit to India. While officially, “negotiations are still going on”, according India’s senior foreign ministry officials, the reason for the delay seems to be that the high cost of upgrading the fighters is causing a rethink, informed sources told defenseworld.net.

The cost of upgrading the 51 fighters is working out to an average of Euro 45 million per piece which is well over the price of acquiring a new generation fighter such as the Rafale or F-16 which is around Euro 30million-35 million. India is seeking to upgrade the fighters with Beyond Visual Range (BVR) capabilities, Look-down, shoot-down capabilities, Advanced Electronic Counter Counter Measures (ECCM) and Multi-target, multi-shoot capabilities.

The total cost is around Euro 2.4 billion of which work worth Euro 1.5 billon will be directly with the French company Dassault and the rest for work done and equipment supplied by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

In comparison, India signed a similar upgrade contract for 62 MiG-29 fighters in 2008 for around $850 million which works to $13.71 million (Euro 10.28 million approximately) per fighter.

Further, the bulk of the IAF Mirage 2000 fleet was acquired in 1986-87 which makes it over 20 year old. The upgradation process is expected to take 7-9 year and residual life of the airframe after the upgrade will be about 15-10 years. A new fighter instead will have a life of 30 plus years.

^^ Dassault is becoming sick day by day... they are putting themselves in a bigger risk.. by being so adamant.. which is one of the big reason i hate Rafale..

yes they are but it is for there business no one in buying the rafale and this is a very good chance for them to bag one big order if they decide to upgrade the 2000's they will be cutting there chances to win it

on topic if there are 260 jets involved i would like to see a combination of typhoons and rafale
but the mod may go for typhoons and f18

i doubt two vendors .. a night mare in all aspects... it will be a single vendor only

two vendors will make some problem such as maintenance cost infrastructure but if the numbers are true a single vendor will take hell lot of time to supply you with 260 jets

but the supply will be fast which we need...........
american ship will surely sail if this occurs

^^ That is the headache of the vendor and HAL.. and he will take care of that ...we are doing the same with MKI...

but if this occurs then upto maximum 50 will be built by vendor in their own supply lines and rest will be in india.
can HAL manage this numbers with others in development?
i dont think they have too much developing units.

i think IAF will elect both f 18 super hornet and euro fighter.f 18 super hornet for navy and euro fighter for IAF. number of aircrafts to be ordered is 200+ i think.

Mirage upgrade deal can be cancelled because the operator i.e. IAF is strictly against this. They are tempted by the new fighters. If India do decide to increase the number to 260, then MOD should make sure two things :

1) If the order is not increase at the time of signing, then they should keep the option of 134 extra fighters. Otherwise placing an order after 5 yeas for the same fighter might get too expensive for us.

2) If the number is increased, then the MOD must also consider to increase the direct delivery of fighters from the vendor which is 1 squadron (18 fighters) right now so that we could receive all the fighters on time.

Instead of canceling Mirage upgrade,up-gradation should continue. They can be used as reserve.
