Indian mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu, who was missing since March 24 while climbing the mountain between Chile and Argentina, has been found dead, his friends said on Saturday.

"Mountains retained its favourite child.. R.I.P Malli Mastan Babu," read an announcement on Facebook page 'Rescue Malli Mastan Babu' created by his friends and well-wishers.

The body of mountaineer, who hailed from Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh, was reportedly spotted on mountains in Chile.

The 40-year-old mountaineer left home for the trip on December 16 and began the expedition from Argentina side on March 24. He was scheduled to return to the base camp the next day but was apparently trapped in bad weather.
All efforts by the family, friends and fellow mountaineers to contact him proved futile.

Malli's elder brother Malli Pedda Mastanaiah told IANS that the family has not received any information from either the central government or the state government. "We have learnt through his friends that he is no more," said Mastanaiah, who is a teacher at a school in Khammam district of Telangana.

Mastanaiah, who was on his way to the home town, said they were waiting to hear from the government about when the body will be brought back.
The Indian government said on Friday that helicopter teams from Argentina and Chile were searching the Andes mountains for Malli.

A Facebook page 'Rescue Malli Mastan Babu' launched by his supporters and well wishers had this single post on Saturday : "Mountains retained its favourite child.. R.I.P Malli Mastan Babu."

The Facebook page 'Rescue Malli Mastan Babu' was being updated regularly with news on the latest status of the search operation in the Andes.

On Saturday, ministry of external affairs spokesperson Akbaruddin tweeted: "RIP #MalliMastanBabu. With his friends & family we are working with authorities in Argentina & Chile on next steps in a difficult situation."

The post about his death has already got his admirers writing messages of tribute.
One post said: "Mastan embraced South America as his own in his last four years.

He learned Spanish to be able to move in South American countries and he really enjoyed the Andes and its vast set of challenges. Mastan has been the amazing unofficial brand ambassador for the South American adventure destinations especially the Andes."

The top mountaineer had achieved the feat of becoming the "fastest seven summiteer" in the world (172 days in 2006, during which he climbed seven summits on seven days of the week in each calendar month).

He was also the first Indian to summit Mt Vinson Massif, the tallest peak in Antarctica and the first person from Andhra Pradesh to scale the Everest. He was an alumnus of IIT-Kharagpur, IIM-Kolkata, NIT-Jamshedpur and Sainik School Korukonda.

Govt to bear expenses for bringing back mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu's body | Zee News

New Delhi: The government will bear the expenses of bringing back the body of ace mountaineer Malli Mastan Babu, who was found dead in the Andes mountains after he had gone missing during a climb.

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu gave this assurance to the mother of the deceased after discussing the matter with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who, he said, has directed Indian missions in Argentina and Chile to make arrangements in this regard.

He said that inclement weather hampered efforts for retrieving Babu's body. The two options available were either to send a special aircraft or a team of expert mountaineers, he said.

Babu had gone missing in the Andes mountains on March 24 during a climb. His body was found on April 4 in a region between Argentina and Chile.

Mountaineer Mastan’s body brought down from Andes - The Times of India
TNN | Apr 15, 2015, 05.43 AM IST

NEW DELHI: It's been 12 days since one of India's top mountaineers Malli Mastan Babu was found dead on April 3 in the Andes. On Monday his body was finally recovered from the mountain and brought down to Tucuman town in northern Argentina where it is being examined and embalmed in a hospital and readied for the long flight back to India.

"The whole process of embalming, essential in this case, takes about three days. Babu's body is likely to be brought to India by the end of the week," his close friend Satyam Beemasaretti, CEO, Neosilica told TOI over phone from Hyderabad.

Babu's sister Malli Dorasanamma, a doctor based out of Tirupati, is also in Argentina.

Babu had become a name to reckon with in the mountaineering world climbing the seven summits in the seven continents in record time. The 40-year-old IIM-Calcutta alumnus was trying to scale solo Cerro Tres Cruces Sur, the second highest mountain of Chile, at 6,749m. He had been missing since March 24 after the weather turned ugly in the area.

Recovery of a body from a mountain, constantly wracked by harsh climate, is an extremely challenging task. "Five mountaineers and a team from Argentinian police were involved in the effort to recover his body," said Beemasaretti, who is touch with the team in Argentina.

Last Friday the team had succeeded in bringing the body down to 5,000m before a blazing snowstorm forced them to withdraw to the base camp, said Supriya Vohra of The Outdoor Journal, an active adventure magazine which had been tracking Babu's disappearance.

In 2006, Babu became the fastest "7 summiteer" in the world by climbing the peaks — Aconcagua (South America), Denali (North America), Elbrus (Europe), Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mt Everest (Asia), Vinson Massif (Antarctica) and Kosciuszko & Carstenz (Australia & Oceania) — between January 19 and July 10 in a record 172 days.

Of late, Babu was scaling peaks in Latin America. He had climbed the tough Aconcagua (6,292m) three times from the Argentinian side; Huascaran (6,768m) in Peru; Sajama (6,542m) in Bolivia; Chimborazo (6,310m) in Ecuador and Ojos de Salado (6,800m) in Chile.

The mountaineer will be accorded a state funeral in his native village in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh.
