In South India, people wear in same style Kurta and tehbund although dhoti is not colourful like Punjab. Now they have replaced Kurta with shirt.

its called 'mundu'(traditional dress of malayalis,thulus and Maldivians)...its either pure white or slightly goldish white in colour...
lungi is colourful dhothi,which is the working dress,night wear or in informal occasion...
checked pattern lungi is called kaili in kerala and tamilnadu...
