China's EV domination grows, as low costs give domestic manufacturers a competitive edge over rivals

As electric vehicle manufacturers in China continue to introduce compelling new and well-priced models, the number of Chinese-made EVs being exported around the world is expected to grow rapidly.

The launch of the BYD Seagull at the Shanghai Auto Show that’s priced from just $11,300 shows how local brands have a “fantastic competitive advantage” over their rivals, chief executive at French auto supplier Faurecia, Patrick Koller, told Reuters.

Koller has spoken with the chief executives and chairman of more than two dozen Chinese car manufacturers and told Reuters that many of them are looking to launch in new markets, including Europe. He believes that “an attractive car for Chinese consumers will be an attractive car for a European consumer.”

Chinese carmakers exported two million vehicles in 2022, a four-fold increase from 2020 and given the strength of exports through the first quarter of 2023, Chinese car exports could top three million vehicles this year.

The nation’s leading EV manufacturer, BYD, managed to export 56,000 vehicles last year with the Yuan Plus EV, also known as the Atto 3, proving particularly popular. While this remains significantly less than the 271,000 EVs that Tesla exported internationally from its Shanghai factory last year, BYD’s exports increased four-fold in 2022 alone and it is aiming to overtake Tesla as the world’s largest EV manufacturer this year.

Nio also has its sights set on Europe. It recently announced that it will launch an affordable EV brand in Europe and may also sell its models in the United States, giving Tesla chief executive Elon Musk other competitors to worry about.

“If the overall user experience we can provide to European users is better somehow, we can establish our competitiveness,” Nio president Win Lihong said. “We can get our fair share.”

2022 was another historic year for EVs, with annual production surpassing 10 million cars for the first time ever. This represents a sizeable bump up from 2021’s figure of 6.7 million.

In this infographic, we’ve used data from EV Volumes to visualize the top 15 brands by output. The color of each brand’s bubble represents their growth from 2021, with the darker shades depicting a larger percentage increase.

BYD Auto​

BYD Auto has leaped past Tesla to become the new EV king, boosting its output by a massive 211% in 2022. Given this trajectory, the company will likely become the world’s first automaker to produce over 2 million EVs in a single year.

BYD has a limited presence in non-domestic markets, but this could change rather quickly. The company is planning a major push into Europe, where it expects to build factories in order to avoid EU tariffs on Chinese car imports.

The company is also building a factory in Thailand, to produce right-hand drive models for markets like Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Tesla​

Tesla increased its output by a respectable 40% in 2022, staying ahead of Western brands like Volkswagen (+10%) and GM (+13%), but falling behind its Chinese rivals such as Geely (+251%).

Whether these Chinese brands can maintain their triple digit growth figures is uncertain, but one thing is clear: Tesla is facing more competition than ever before.

The company is targeting annual production of 20 million cars by 2030, meaning it will need to keep yearly growth rates in the high double digits for the rest of the decade. To support this initiative, Tesla is planning a multi-billion dollar factory in Mexico capable of producing 1 million cars a year.

Hyundai​

Hyundai Motor Company, which also owns Kia, posted a similar growth rate to Tesla. The South Korean automaker was a relatively early player in the EV space, revealing the first Hyundai Ioniq in 2016.

In late 2022, several countries including South Korea expressed their disapproval of the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act, which withdrew tax credits on EVs not produced within the United States.

Hyundai is currently building a $5.5 billion EV factory in the state of Georgia, but this facility will not become operational until 2025. In the meantime, South Korea has revised its own EV subsidy program to favor domestic brands.

Chinese EV, costing $11,000 new, coming to Europe, US, says officials​

SHANGHAI, China: During this week's Shanghai Auto Show, China's largest electric vehicle maker, BYD, unveiled an electric car known as the Seagull, with a range of more than 186 miles and a starting price of some $11,000, a quarter of the cost of most EVs in the European market.

In a note to investors, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said, "The Seagull is another manifestation of the aggressive deflationary pressures coming from (Chinese) automakers."

Chinese companies will begin a "more aggressive push" to sell entry-level EVs outside China, he added.

Tesla has cut the prices of its EVs to drive demand, prompting other automakers, including in China, to follow suit.

More Chinese EVs manufactured by BYD and its rivals will be headed to Europe, Southeast Asia and other overseas markets, threatening established automakers, according to executives and analysts.

"I think an attractive car for Chinese consumers will be an attractive car for a European consumer," said Patrick Koller, chief executive of French auto supplier Faurecia, as quoted by Reuters.

"Because of their fantastic competitive advantage, Chinese automakers could look to sell one million cars per year in Europe, equivalent to 8 percent of the market last year," he added.

This week, Chinese premium EV maker Nio, which competes against luxury brands such as BMW, said it is evaluating the US market and will launch a new, more affordable EV brand with its first target market Europe.

"If the overall user experience we can provide to European users is better somehow, we can establish our competitiveness. We can get our fair share," said the company's president, Qin Lihong.

Zeekr, a premium EV brand held by China's Geely, said it will be active in most European markets by 2026.

In addition, between 2020 and 2022, exports of Chinese cars rose four-fold to more than two million vehicles, with BYD's exports rising four-fold last year at 56,000 vehicles, led by its Yuan Plus EV.

BYD has not announced export plans for the Seagull, which is priced below what is now the best selling EV in China, the BYD Dolphin, which is priced from $17,000 in China and will be available in Europe beginning in the fourth quarter.
