Midrise Architecture in Dhaka Bangladesh

:hitwall:

Those certain topics cannot be edited by random users and can only edited by wiki editors, for example Bangladesh, you cannot edit it unless you are an established editor. The list on Kolkata buildings is definitely not among those important topics since any random guy can edit (try it yourself if you don't believe), the list is not even properly cited!

Delete that article in Wiki, write "Kolkata has no tall buildings, only huts", show me tomorrow, I accept, problem solved. :)

May be you should first properly "comprehend" my post before replying me. Did I say they don't exist? I said this sort of wiki lists are either incomplete or exaggerated!

Forget Wiki, just tell me which part of that Wiki page was exaggerated, I will clear your doubts, problem solved.

And I never said 20 storied buildings are highrises!

Good, so you cannot be "Miles ahead of Kolkata" in terms of highrises with a maximum limit of 20-storied buildings.

What logic!

Don't worry this time I will let you win and have the last post!

I have told you about this habit of yours previously also, remember? :-)

No big deal, take a look: List of tallest buildings in Kolkata - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Do you really think I'll go for searching each building listed there to argue with you on this silly topic? You are entitled to rely on wiki that too without any citation, your wish!

maximum limit of 20-storied buildings? You seem to be on overdose! :cheesy:

Nah, I'm reading about it for the first time. But you'll have the last post this time, don't worry! :enjoy:

Check again, your nonsense has been corrected already, not by me though.

You are irritatingly obstinate, Some of these buildings are visible from my home.

As informed by Bilal9.

Aachha thik hai - let me solve this issue once and for all.

Dhaka architecture has its unique quality in that everything is locally designed by very talented, internationally renowned, award-winning architects. I personally like Dhaka Architecture better only for the simple reason that I've personally known many of the teachers and students personally and am aware about the quality of their artistry and their work. I am not aware of any commercial building in the subcontinent that has Bengali, Hindi or Urdu poetry inscribed all over it's sides. But Dhaka has one. Dhaka's architecture is an extension and a delicate reflection of its cultural aura and scene as well as practical considerations given its tropical location and seasons. Ten years ago Dhaka as a modern architectural showcase was probably ahead of Kolkata - but now, I'm not so sure.

On the other hand - Kolkata has had lots of real estate investments very recently made by (among others) larger Indian commercial groups like DLF. So its face is recently more modern in some cases. The town-planning and investments have been done professionally (especially in Rajarhat and Salt Lake Sector 5 near the airport) and the infrastructure is quite nice. This is a result of IT BPO and call-center business moving into town because of higher salaries in the rest of India. As a result the IT parks have seen huge investments by Indian companies in new buildings and road infrastructure. Lots of work by the renowned Charles Correa and Hafeez Contractor among others.

However Dhaka's architecture is well ahead in modernity even compared to the rest of the subcontinent. There is no reason why Dhaka should not boast of its modernity - even as some uninformed people in the subcontinent may see Dhaka as a 'provincial' place. Dhaka's movement of modernity in architecture goes back to the mid-1800's and has a record of urbanity no less glorious than Kolkata.

This being said - you cannot feel the architectural vibe of either city if you are not actually in town and in person to see the buildings. Just a few images on the internet does not give a proper contextual feel. And Kolkata maybe far ahead today - but Dhaka is just getting started building its new planned suburbs and exurbia, with both residential and commercial areas. New areas like Purbachal, Nikunjo etc. are just coming up and this is only a start. I hope the new neighborhoods concentrate on what is clearly lacking at this time - civic facilities, open air breathing space, green areas, trailways and bike-ways. Scores of complete planned towns like Rajarhat have been in planning for the last couple of years. I will divulge details as I find them.

Also - @extra terrestrial is right - there is a growing number of 40 story buildings in Dhaka - although I suspect the piling costs are in the crores - keeping a check on that activity. Dhaka's commercial building activity however isn't waning anytime soon though.

And nobody is saying we cannot visit Kolkata and enjoy the scenery while we take in shopping and dining pleasures :-). The more nice neighborhoods - the merrier it is.

A few projects by Oli Ahmed Architects - another atelier in Dhaka.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Project: Shahida Tower
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Status: Built
Year: 2012
Team Leader: Oli Mahmud
Design Team: Mominul Islam, Abdulla Al Mamun, Md.Ali, Sanjoy Roy

Description:
In the dense urban dwelling of Dhaka city relation between nature and built environment is crucial. The design paints green nature on a rigid urban canvas. Basic design strategy of the project is manipulated by casually placed green balcony at the front, where each unit could enjoy their own green corner as breathing space. Three dimensional array of veranda at alternative altitude creates pixaleted expression on façade, which has been unified by inserting a rectangular outer frame. Interestingly, due to dislocations of balconies multiple height overhead space has been achieved at the green areas and become means of socialization among the floors.

In this 10-storied apartment there are two living units at each level while ground level serves for parking & public access to the building. Vertical core and fire exit is placed at the rare side to maximize front exposure at south. This allow summer breeze and winter sun at regular habitable areas of the living quarters. Color of plastered surface and tiles work are maintained in favor of lower thermal gain.

The project experiments with materiality. Departing from regular combination of traditional brick, industry made rough tiles and painted surfaces created new tune with green plants.

Project: Chowdhury Tower
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Status: Ongoing
Year: 2013
Team Leader: Oli Mahmud
Design Team: Abdulla Al Mamun, Sanjoy Roy, Abu Hanif

Description:
Densely buildings envelop and narrow strip approach, challenged functional arrangement in the plot that has been confronted with L-shaped building solution. An internal natural exhaust system corresponds with the apartments at each level, enriched with hanging garden and family spaces.

Framed balcony of each apartment endures adequate aperture towards the urban context. Shifting from regular vertical array, a gradual displacement in projection of balconies creates strong visual motion of the wings. That defies the building aesthetics in more organic manner.

Project: Bashantopur Tower
Location: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Status: Ongoing
Year: 2014
Team Leader: Oli Mahmud
Design Team: Abdulla Al Mamun, Sanjoy Roy, Abu Hanif

Description:
The project is exposed to the adjacent green field of Bangladesh Fire Service Authority. Central vertical core separates two units at front and back manner, whilst providing both front exposures to have field view. Approaching from the main street building volume has been stretched side-wise that provides certain visual setback and creates an open space for common share of the units.

Crisscross projected box at corner de-fragment the volume and become focal point. Bottom slab of each projected box is for balcony and top is for gardening. Eventually each floor is benefited with balcony and garden for pleasant living situation.

Project: Girl's Dormitory
Location: Noakhali, Bangladesh
Status: Ongoing
Year: 2014
Team Leader: Oli Mahmud
Design Team: Sadia Ahmed Liza, Abu Hanif , Ashish Mondal

Description:
Encouraging strong socialization among the occupants is the design goal of this project. Considering program and contextual situation physically introverted building typology has been adopted.

A regular rectangle is bisected and transformed into a pentagon shape. This allows achieving more usable spaces within site limitations and also minimizing thermal gain. All the arms contain living areas whilst the junction points are used as service spaces like stair and toilet areas. Dining area is located at north western corner at ground level topped with common room and reading area at first floor level.

A double height space at east greets into the building interior and also acts as the summer time cool air access point. The internal social space is the distinct feature of this dormitory. Girls will be able to play, walk, gossip and interact at this open courtyard. Even external balconies are placed at alternative shifting position to encourage communication among them.

You're right, forgot about that one. Dhaka's example however is embedded in exterior concrete panels (and etched in glass) and goes up all the way to fourteen floors or so. I'm talking about 'Nina Kabbo' of Nina Holdings Group of course. Is there Urdu poetry inscribed architecture in Pakistan? @Marshmallow Sahab might know.
