I don't know if such comparisons make sense other than the mudslinging that pleases a few. Maybe design wise there could be something to learn. Bangladesh-e highrise kora extremely difficult because base-rock is very deep and piling costs become prohibitive. So Kolkata will have way more taller highrises than Dhaka.

Dhaka still has more highrises than Kolkata, only Mumbai is ahead of Dhaka! However, the public transport infrastructure is the worst!

Anyway, nice thread @Bilal9 , :enjoy:

Let's not bring Kolkata here, 1 sq.km. of New Town would have more highrises than in entire Dhaka, and those are proper highrises. :)

Everyone loves to exaggerate about their own city. I'd sure like to see some pictures of New Town though.

Like I've said before - It is prohibitive to lay foundation for any taller than twenty stories height in Dhaka. The reason being that Dhaka soil is super soft (alluvial soil, polymati), Bedrock is often about hundred or so feet deep, so piling is super expensive. Kolkata buildings will always be taller than Dhaka because they will be cheaper to build there.

The actual number of twenty some story 'vanilla looking' mid-rises (mostly residential) in Dhaka will probably approach over five hundred by now. But this thread is about Dhaka - not Kolkata.

Yeah let's open a separate thread.... :-)

Yes it is for foreigners. You can get beer anywhere (some of it local made including whiskey). And its pretty reasonable too...

beer is legal for everybody??
or is it all just for foreigners?

Some pics are available in this thread, but these are old pics: Dhaka v/s Kolkata

Only a few Rajarhat New Town pics are available on the internet, but you have to search by project names to get good pictures, or I have to click it myself for best views. But I can tell you that New Town is being developed as a large modern city with wide 6-lane, 8-lane roads and glitzy tall towers, and it does look like Dubai in many places!! :D

@Bilal9 I just replied to @extra terrestrial who dragged Kolkata into this thread. :)

Okay a brief OT foray just to respond to Qamar Bhai - the official Bangladesh govt. 'policy' for alcohol goes like this (kind of silly, but foreigners skirt around it all the time),
  • No establishment 'openly' serves alcohol on Fridays (Weekly Muslim Holiday).
  • Consumption of alcohol is allowed for any non-Muslim foreigners even on Fridays if it is consumed inside hotel room.
  • Otherwise alcohol can be served in bars and restaurants in most other days
  • People of course drink at home without issue. Possession of alcohol is not a crime.
  • Enforcement of these regulations are very lax - cops get paid off and never bother anyone.
However alcohol of any kind is never 'legal' (you have to respect Muslim sensitivities being that the majority population happens to be Muslim). However 'beer' (they are sold under the name 'malt beverage') is widely available because these contain less alcohol than stipulated lower limit - local brands like 'Hunter' and 'Bangla' beer are widely available. Fosters (Australian), Singha (Thai) and Carlsberg (Danish?) are popular as well. Read an old article,

Actually it was you who first brought Kolkata here, and ask any neutral person, Dhaka has way higher highrises than Kolkata and is only behind Mumbai. Take a look at the Dhaka vs Kolkata thread yourself, even many Indians commented there about Dhaka having more highrises.

Where?

20-storied buildings cannot be called highrises dear, mid-rises would be a more appropriate term. And lets not bring Mumbai here, I mean seriously.

even many Indians commented there about Dhaka having more highrises.
