The making of a megacity: how Dhaka transformed in 50 years of Bangladesh

Lack of family planning is real issue in our case.

Educated women have a way to earn their own incomes and don't have to depend on a man's income.

That way they control if/when they get pregnant. Children also have better health outcomes.

Women's education is key. That priority should be front and center.
Heard they’re ruining Chittagong now, @DalalErMaNodi enlighten us when you’re back
Gulshan is a nice area, that’s the least I expect from place to live

Yeah some newer properties and places in North Dhaka are okay. I have posted those pictures in the infra sticky thread before.

We can't compare to Bangalore. Indians have been bringing in backoffice business to that city since the 1990's. However Dhaka's pace of building new neighborhoods and infra is quicker than most cities in India, at least right now.

This is United House (commercial development) in Baridhara area (North Dhaka) I think.

Last but not least new planned suburbs like Purbachal and Jolshiri will have smart cities, so there is some hope yet. In five years time 2nd tier Indian cities lie Bangalore won't be able to hold a candle to Dhaka Insha Allah...

Chittagong is alot safer and lot less crowded as compared to Dhaka, you're never really far from nature in Chittagong (obviously).

Water logging is an issue and a good chunk of our main roads to and fro the port area in ruin thanks to the high traffic of goods laden trucks.

Drainage system needs to be worked on too.

Anywho, Chittagong still has a 'homey' feel to it, you'll feel it immediately should you step foot here, I'll just attribute it to the lower population density & overall relaxed 'vibe' to the city which is absent in metropolis Dhaka.

Foy's lake and Kulshi are good places to live in Chittagong, our equivalent of Banani, I suppose...

The Former is a very green area and there's a awesome manmade lake from which the locality gets its name.

The city can still be saved, something that cannot be said for Dhaka, however, CDA is full of tossers who'd rather feast on fatty beef stew than fix their city.

So much for 'Chatgaiya-ness'.

OK it's been fifty years we had to own up.

No need to point fingers at each other anymore. :-)

Thanks for this and goes to show the steady progress that BD has made after 50 years of independence.

Still a long way to go but the country is in the right direction.

On that video , Indians below in the comments getting triggered left and right lmao

We have plenty of cities. However, this is not about India. Dhaka being only city in Bangladesh, it is grossly managed.

Lol. Bangladesh is more urbanized. Good joke.

In addition to besting India in several HDI factors, Bangladesh bests India in urbanization too (per CIA Factbook).

India
Bangladesh

Urbanizationurban population: 34.9% of total population (2020)
rate of urbanization: 2.37% annual rate of change (2015-20 est.)
urban population: 38.2% of total population (2020)
rate of urbanization: 3.17% annual rate of change (2015-20 est.)

Indians are breeding like rabbits...

Population growth rate1.1% (2020 est.)0.98% (2020 est.)

Total fertility rate2.35 children born/woman (2020 est.)2.11 children born/woman (2020 est.)

Several health indicators will show what we already know...

Infant mortality ratetotal: 35.4 deaths/1,000 live births
male: 34.4 deaths/1,000 live births
female: 36.5 deaths/1,000 live births (2020 est.)
total: 28.3 deaths/1,000 live births
male: 30.6 deaths/1,000 live births
female: 26 deaths/1,000 live births (2020 est.)
Life expectancy at birthtotal population: 69.7 years
male: 68.4 years
female: 71.2 years (2020 est.)
total population: 74.2 years
male: 72 years
female: 76.5 years (2020 est.)

Children under the age of 5 years underweight33.4% (2016/18)21.9% (2017/18)
Health expenditures3.5% (2017)2.3% (2017)

Contraceptive prevalence rate53.5% (2015/16)62.3% (2014)

However besting India cannot be the end goal of any country, it is self-defeating. India's position in HDI is not the world's best. Everyone knows that.

Dhaka does suck. But there are half a dozen mega projects underway in Dhaka to improve the city. And there are better managed, clean areas in the city. Eventually the industrial activity will be removed to the SEZs from Dhaka central areas, and slums will be reduced. Current Mayors are trying but Rome won't be built in a day.
