Interesting buildings, does Dhaka have any skyscrapers under construction or is their some height restriction in the city? Would like to see some skyline pics of Dhaka.

Why Thanks! :-)

The tallest building in Dhaka built so far is 40 or so stories. So height-wise things haven't really developed. One of the reasons is that base-rock is very deep.

Building high-rise or super-talls depends on a number of basic economic factors.

1. Innovative and lightweight construction techniques for super-talls such as welded or bolted steel frames instead of RCC are still uncommon in Bangladesh (in fact most of South Asia). This drives up construction cost and is seen as not preferable.

2. Base-rock in Dhaka -- and also most of Bangladesh is too deep at 60~80 meters below the surface (which is at sea level). Above base-rock it is mostly micro-fine clay (recent alluvial soil) deposited in abandoned water channels which is subject to liquefaction and subsidence.

Essentially The light clay has little sideways lateral-torque strength compared to much older (and denser) clay substrates in older non-delta Indian regions like Mumbai or even Kolkata. This cannot practically support high-rises much less super-talls. If you still want high-rises above 30 stories then piling will need to be pushed all the way down to bedrock at 60 meters plus which will become very expensive and unprofitable.

I'm no Civil Engineer or Geo-technical guy. But this is my observation.

In any case since there is really no high-rise you can't really call Dhaka's collections of buildings skylines. But here they are anyways. These are a mix of old and new pictures.
