Thanks for the nice pics. Really Dhaka is changing so fast. I use to roam around South part of Dhaka.
When I some times go to visit the North Parts. It really mesmerizes me.

The Grand Dame of Dhaka hotels - the 'Inter-Continental' in the 60's

Now for the last couple of decades it's been called The Sheraton Hotel. The lawn in the photo above is no more. A large Banquet Hall has been built on it.

However the design is dated and in sore need of a makeover. The hotel (now clalled Ruposhi Bangla) was closed in September 2014 for a year-long renovation. Will open again in early 2016. Design renders below.

Agrani Bank will fund major portion of Ruposhi Bangla Hotel’s renovation work beginning in September 16, officials at the tourism ministry said.

Bangladesh Services Ltd, the management of the state owned five-star hotel will go for inking a deal shortly to bear the renovation cost of $43.13m (around Tk335.34 core). The expenditure may increase by 10 per cent according to the deal.

“Agrani Bank has given us the assurance for funding the renovation,” said Rashed Khan Menon, minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism. The teams and conditions are yet to be negotiated.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held a meeting with top officials of the Tourism and Civil Aviation Ministry for the first time after she assumed office straightway for the second term in early January.

Hasina was briefed all the activities and performances of the ministry, said the minister.

According to the meeting discussion, Ruposhi Bangla Hotel will remain closed for at least 16 months from September as the management plans for a massive renovation before rebranding it for the InterContinental Hotels chain.

Meeting sources said the premier gave her consent not to change the decision of shut downing the hotel during renovation work.

Ruposhi Bangla Hotel Sramik O Karmachari Union demanded its partial closure during the renovation work from the very first time just after the deal was signed between Bangladesh Services Limited and InterContinental Hotels Chain in February 2012 for 30 years.

Earlier, James McDonald, general manager of Ruposhi Bangla Hotel, said, “We need to change every pipe, every cable, every toilet [fittings] and every bathtub to turn this hotel into a world-standard one. It is impossible to offer the service and carry out the renovation work at the same time.”

The meeting also decided to offload tender for renovation work on 1 June with a target to begin the physical work on September 16. The hotel will not take any guests from September 1.

Well technically not really a midrise, nor in Dhaka (this one is in the Sunderbans). However resorts like these are planned in all large riverine ports in Bangladesh including Dhaka.

Couple of day-time/night-time shots from the HatirJheel area in mid-Dhaka (near Karwan Bazaar) photo credits DhakaDailyPhoto & RH Suman respectively. This is a water-shed area in Mid-Dhaka under threat of encroachment revived recently by the Bangladesh Army Corps of Engineers. The planning, design, construction and hard-scaping/land-scaping was completed in record time, as is the norm with any army project.

Aaand - last but not least, Dhaka's premier design house and atelier 'Sthapotik' demonstrates their rationale behind the design of the Agrani Bank HQ. Granted this may be one of their many HQ's (Agrani is a huge state-owned bank), but this new design HQ is quite a leap for them.

The Forum in Tejgaon, Dhaka completed with SPL Western Tower on the right. Stark contrasts between old 60's era low-rises and the new Glass-clad commercial properties. The same thing has been observed in Singapore, Bangkok, Seoul, KL, Jakarta, Manila and now in Saigon and Hanoi.

The last image above was taken (looking Northward) from the Dhaka Westin. Westin is planning another 47 story tower around Dhaka. But placing it close to the Airport might face height restrictions. Image copyright Dope Khor.
