With the effort and contribution of Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar and as a result of support from related Ministries and Commands, MARSEC COE became the second NATO Accredited COE of Turkey, 26th Accredited COE of NATO, and obtained the status of “International Military Organization” on 08 June 2020.

MARSEC COE was nationally established on 12 November 2012 by Turkish Navy with the aim of improving training, research and development and interoperability in the field of maritime security in surrounding seas.

MARSEC COE’s “NATO Accreditation and Activation” process started on September 2018 with the aim of transforming MARSEC COE from a Center that meets the national needs to a global brand that provides NATO needs and standards. This transformation was initiated because of the cross-border nature of maritime security risks and the necessity of finding multinational solutions to these risks.

During this process;

- “Operational and Functional Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Signing Ceremony” was conducted on 18 October 2019 at Allied Command Transformation/Norfolk with the participation of representatives from MARSEC COE framework and sponsoring nations (Turkey, Greece and Romania),

- MoUs were approved by the President of Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and went into effect on 27 December 2019

With the immense efforts of Ministry of National Defense, related Ministries and Commands; NATO Accredited MARSEC COE will be a center that will provide innovative and comprehensive solutions in every aspect of Maritime Security Operations and it also will be an International Military Organization that will act as a gateway which opens to the international community.
