How many Chinese population living 1958-1962 mainland of China? 600million(0.6billion) Chinese. If tens of millions of deaths is truth, it means 1/5~1/6 Chinese died almost every Chinese family has 1~2 member(their grandpa/grandma + parents + children) died during that years.

A famine did happen around 1960, my grandpa told me about that , He said some people died without any sign just because of extremely malnutrition .

I do not think it is possible to find out exactly how many die because of Great Leap Forward. It is not really that important how many, the subject is best left for the professional.
The problem is, the debate that is very active in China look mostly politically motivated. With the result, it is almost impossible to know who to trust. But that is what happen to most controversial and very complicated subject. The truth is, no matter where the number comes from, it is a gross estimate at best, given the size and chaotic nature of China at the time.
There are many controversy and counter argument about Yang Jisheng's book in China. Unfortunately NYT will never give you their side of the story.

You cannot know what is acceptable unless you are presented with its contrast, the thing that is unacceptable. You must present arguments as to why A is acceptable but B is unacceptable. You cannot know what is truthful unless you exposed the lie as to why it is a falsehood and you must make that exposure public.
