JAGDALPUR: Alarm radiated through Bastar on Friday morning as two Sahastra Seema Bal (SSB) jawans were killed and two others injured in a landmine explosion triggered by the Maoists. This was the first ever explosion on NH 16, a highway leading to Dantewada.

Built by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), the 86 km stretch of smooth highway connecting Dantewada with Jagdalpur, Bastar's headquarters, is considered the safest and busiest road in the region's insurgency hit south.

On Friday morning, a convoy of 11 mini trucks carrying men and supplies of SSB's 41 battalion stationed in Dantewada left for Raipur. "Deployed since 2008 to secure government camps, SSB is currently being withdrawn from the district. This was the last contingent to leave," said Ankit Garg, superintendent of police, Dantewada.

As the convoy crossed the boundaries of Dantewada and entered Bastar district, near Pendra village, 60 kilometres short of Jagdalpur, an explosion hit the fourth truck. Four jawans were travelling in the front cabin. Two died and two others were rushed to Jagdalpur. The assorted boxes containing kitchen appliances, maps and boards, came apart, spilling their shattered content, twenty feet away from a crater in the road.

"The crater formed is five feet deep. On a road as strong as this, it means a very large quantity of explosives were planted," said Garg.

Asked how explosives could be planted under a well built highway, T J Longkumer, Bastar's inspector general, said most likely they had been planted by digging a hole from the side of the highway.

While the area is considered insurgency free, the police said three months ago, on July 4, fire had been exchanged with Maoists 10 kilometres from the spot, near Korangali village.

Time to really start this civil war. WTF are Singh, Browne and Verma sitting and fattening their bottoms in Sena Bhawan for eh? Why the hell can't they fight the Maoists? Are they scared that they're not equipped enough, toeing the lines of this cowardly fake GOI?

Sometime I feel that only those who toe Congress' lines get promoted to commanders' position. Time to reshuffle. Either the triservice chiefs must agree or get fired.

All you need to learn about the Naxals in india.

the problem is more severe in india, the naxals have the potential to polarize the indian people, between haves and have not's, it shows the national failure of the indian state, to deal with poverty that they are 1 of only 2 states in the world, where Maoism is actually gaining ground.

india has certainly failed to deal with it's poverty - that is why it is only 1 of two countries in the world, who has an active and growing Maoist insurgency.

Naxalism has been there for decades. Indian national mainstream is still undeterred by these Maoists. We have only grown in these decades.

Growing .. I guess not. ULFA and khalsa have already surrendered. Our towns and cities are safe. Poverty -- you are giving us tough competition though.

As Arundhati so eloquently states, growth has not helped the Avidasis and the other poor to have their lives improved, the insurgency is now active in up to a third of indian states. It is spreading.

Get in the friggin Army for Christ's sake.Enough of this Paramilitary forces nonsense.Hand over all operations to the Indian Army,Sabko thikhane laga denge ek maheene me.

The hoax that the Maoists are fighting a righteous war is also flawed. They rely on the ideology of convenience;they make their money by harassing businessmen and threatening villagers and fall back to their hypocritical ideology when they are on the receiving end. It's high time for India to drop pretenses or think about it's international image and hunt these vermin with a vengeance.
