I was going to open another thread about something that has been bugging me for the last couple of days but then decided to post here--very relevant. So here it is:
So a couple of days ago, spoke with a friend from Karachi. I have not interacted with him much in decades. He is also an Urdu Speaker like me. The conversation went something like this:
Me: How is life.
He: It's okay but we Muhajirs have it bad in Pakistan. I wished there was no Pakistan.
Me (Shocked): What are you talking about??
He: Well, our hard-work being stolen by the Waderas of Sindh. Can't get govt jobs [etc, etc]
Me: But why do you wish there had not been a Pakistan? I can't imagine living in India!
He: Well, I don't want to live in India but, you know, we [Muslims] ruled India for centuries and we would still be ruling there had it not been for Pakistan.
Me: No, you are deluded! The British were going to leave and, despite all the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the Subcontinent, the Hindus are far too numerous and they would rule!
[Some more back and forth...]
Me: Let's not talk about politics right now.
He is frustrated with his career circumstances and I had offered to help him some months ago, as an old friend. But look at his circumstances: Three children from 17-21 age range. One of them is on 'full scholarship' at a great university getting Computer Science and the others are also on successful career paths of their own.
I didn't want to embarrass him to point out his obvious now/future good station in life as I see it. I did try to assure him that in just a few years his children will be successful professionals and a great asset for him. I gave him the example of my own brother whose kids are college graduates and have decent jobs in Karachi.
I pointed out to him that I know several families in America (of white people) where the kids have been 'running around' and they have ruined their parents' lives!! I said you and everyone else I know in Pakistan is very lucky on that subject.
Anyway, it's off my chest now!
your friend sounds a lot like my older brother. his life is going great, yet he curses his career choice. he drove us all insane. he would come to our rooms, sometimes at midnight on a weedend, and moan about his career till fajr.
