Almost everything that we currently have but on a smaller scale.

We have a huge demand for cement due to the large scale construction going on and Pakistani cement is said to be cheaper than the Indian one.

Before 9-11 what industry bharits had?

Everything that we have now starting from the Mahindras, TATAs, Reliance, Infoysys, Wipro, Bajaj and everything else. We started building/manufacturing Automobiles, Planes, Software, steel, telecommunications, etc etc much before any other country in S. Asia. When it comes to Engineering goods, we were the leaders then and still are but with a super huge margin. Please do your home work before speaking trash.

Why 9-11 ?? Instead of 9-11 ,more appropriate time should be 1991 IMHO.It was an ambition of our first PM to make India a self reliant nation in each and every field and so they planned and invested in everything that was needed for the country like heavy industries (BHEL ,SAIL,ONGCand the likes),education (IITs and the likes),Agriculture (Green revolution etc).We always had all the industries to produce all we needed but in comparison to western nations we were still backward (and still backward/dependent in some fields) .

The real opportunity came in 1991 when our markets opened for the world.Our dormant industries took the opportunity and flourished and hence today we have successful groups like TATAs , Mahindra ,ONGC(videsh),L&T and countless others which produce almost everything that our country need, though I must add that we still have a long distance to go before becoming a fully industrialized nation..This link might give some idea of our industries and our productsList of companies of India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
