Anyway , do these Mi17s are able to carry the 105mm light field guns ?

They carry 105 mm gun REGULARLY

It is a light gun just 2100 KG

M777 is 4100 KG

Back home, the Kalyani group had recently at the DefExpo 2016 exhibited the first prototype system–the Bharat Ultra-Light Howitzer that couldpose direct competition against the M777 Howitzers, made out of Titanium.

Bharat Ultra-Light Howitzer has been developed using light weight exotic materials like Titanium and Aluminium based alloys. The company also has a system ready for testing before the end of this year.

That means it required at least 1year minimum to complete trials .
Plus industrial production another 1year minimum


Hence we required M777 as stop gap

Nice gun, but don't look lighter then M777 and not very good for mountain region like Siachin or Kargil.

The Defence Acquisition Council or DAC - headed by the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar - which met today, decided to send the letter of acceptance to the US.

India will be buying the 155 mm M777 guns at a cost of about $750 million. This is first major buy for the Mountain Strike Corps.

Of the 145 guns, 25 will be supplied in a ready to use condition while the rest will be assembled and tested at the Mahindra facility in India.

In a related move, the DAC also asked Ordnance Factory Board (Jabalpur) to provide three 155 mm 45 caliber indigenously produced guns - named Dhanush - to Indian Army by June 30 and another three more guns by September. The army will be ordering 18 more guns.

There are, however, several improvements that have been in the Dhanush. For instance, Dhanush has a longer range of 38 km as against the 27-km of Bofors. And, it automatically changes targeting systems to adopt to changes in ammunition and atmospheric pressures. Besides, the gunner has a high resolution sight which includes infrared that helps better targeting at night.

Sources said the 18 guns will be delivered in 18 months after the contract is signed. Another 36 more guns are to be delivered in the next the 12 months thereafter. The remaining 60 guns will be delivered by June 2020.

The Indian Army's needs 2,800 to 3,000 155 mm guns.

The irony is, we ourselves make it but the machine was late into the game and might create its own market without compromising the deal for M777.

The Product is Bharat 52 light howitzer and Bharat ultra light howitzer.

But even getting a manufacturing plant to assemble and test M777s is under Modi's, "Make in India", policy. Why post Chinese products in an Indian defence thread? Should members post US defence products in Chinese threads?

Well yeah, a few hundred kilograms dont matter. The ultra light howitzer of Kalyani group and M777 have a weight difference of 300 kg's.
