Gen Zubair (here is why)

  • His postings as CGS and DG SPD afforded him an opportunity to work very closely with PM Sharif and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar.
  • headed the Staff Duties (SD) Directorate, whose personnel are commonly known in the army as ‘paper tigers’.
  • His stay at the directorate and his earlier posting as principal staff officer to the army chief brought him closer to Gen Kayani, and he is generally seen as Gen Kayani’s protégé
  • his primary shortcoming is that he has never served in a conflict zone
so he fits the bill and ticks all the correct boxes for Nawaz
.. Nawaz and his family member Dar know the general. second bullet point is also appealing to Nawaz as he wont expect similar threat to his throne like he will feel from a field general. Kyani factor is also very positive as Kyani easily fades away in the history as the most unassuming general. but the most appealing part for Nawaz is the final one that the general is just a book general (another unlisted quality that he reads a lot).

in the words of retired Lt Gen Tariq Khan,
"Nawaz sherif's only consideration is to choose someone he can comfortably work with. that idiot not only lacks the basic sense & ability to choose a suitable COAS but also doesn't care "

now above is not a negative commentary on Gen Zubair. he, unfortunately for the army is the best suited for Nawaz not for his integrity, capacity or suitability to the role but suitability to the house of Sheirfs

what remains to be seen is how general `Raheel's recommendations will affect Nawaz sherif (in case they are different from Nawaz's presumed choice)

I think similar was said about General Raheel Shareef before his appointment that he was busy training the soldiers and never involved in the war

The soldier is always going through rigorious training and with promotion it just further enhances their skills. It hardly matters if the COAS has not been on the conflict zone, so did General Raheel but he proved his worth when it mattered the most

The new COAS is going to enjoy the same team of skilled Generals and Lt Generals who have been on the war front for years so he will not oblivous with the situation of Zarb e Azb and India's attempt to provoke war on the other side of the border

Excerpt of an old report of The News
He commanded an infantry brigade, division in the past and now, he was Bahawalpur Corps commander before moving in as DG SPD.

He seems to have a career focused more toward 'traditional threat'

Top military circles say that COAS General Sharif appointed one of the best brainy, brave and bold Generals to be in charge of the country’s strategic assets in the shape of Lt Gen Zubair Hayat.

but he was a common choice of General Sharif & General Rashad for one of the most sensitive position in Pakistan's defence establishment.

So I think he is not fit as per NS criteria
Another consideration likely to be taken into account would be the prospective candidates’ views on foreign policy issues, particularly ties with India.

As per PM's mouthpiece, Najam Sethi, Zubair is going to be CJSC. COAS will be either Bajwa or Ramday. Nadeem is out for being more professional and blunt.

.
Doesn't have personality I am afraid. you need a bulldozer type of guy to lead Army at this critical juncture . Raheel had this repo. General Bajwa, looks to be in similar mold.

. . . .
We need a coas with personality and inteligence.

'Tum nai 3 saalon main chalay jana hain, hum nai humesha rehna hai' famous words of someone who is planning to fly back. I am thinking whether this change of command really changes everything so quickly. Fate of 180 million or more resides on one notification. Who so ever claims personalities don't matter in army knows no shit about how army works. It all comes down to simple yes or no at the end of exhaustive deliberations if any. A simple yes or no could mean success or a stalemate. A simple yes or no could mean no Kargil or Op Gibraltar or NS or no NS. Behind that choice lies a man with his experiences, likes/dislikes, prejudices, pre conceived notions, psyche and even upbringing and family background. It is not the day to day running of army that matters but those special and lonely moments of decision making in face of a dilemma or an adversity and making a right call.

My fellow countrymen as bizarre and a tad uncomfortable as it sounds this gamble of a nomination will seal the future of Pakistan or atleast the immediate one.

I think he would replace General Rashid Mahmood and General Raheel Shareef could be replaced by General Ishfaq Ahmed who is current core commander Multan. He is also the main planner of Zarb e Azb operation and also of Swat operation and operate Rah e Nijat. He now leading strike core. So military wise he is best man for the job.

.
today in his program dr shahid masood said that asif the z man gave extension to kiyani because he said the generals next in line were more like pervez the mush man.....

.
Yea I noticed that as well. You need people like those not only to lead wars but to negotiate with other powers to be. Raheel did plenty of hard talking with yanks, we need to carry on this with new chief with the right personality.
thats him
