One thing is sure, whoever becomes COAS, the first thing on his mind will be that he has big shoes to fill. Seldom in the past has a COAS become a public figure (unless he became Marshal Law administrator that is), even more so, none of them was given the stature of a public hero. This means that 180 million pairs of eyes will be focused on the guy who will be replacing arguably the most popular leader after Quaid-e-Azam and maybe Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He will have no margin for error or to create any political affiliations.
One more thing, if NS has even a pint of brain he will not take another jab at the army by not appointing the man most favored by them. With Madam Mariam's neck already on the line for the Dawngate case, i think he will have the common sense to appoint Gen. Ashfaq as the next COAS.
