Load-shedding leads to riots in Pakistan

It seems these rioters are happy to destroy country, their faces are smiles and joy running around !!

Line losses..
over 50% or more electric power is lost in transmission lines.
Does that mean electricity theft? 50% is pretty massive amount of wastage! But is there political will to bring the offenders to book? Is it because of vote bank politics that officials are told to turn a blind eye to what's going on? Or are the officials scared to take any action against them?

no political will....u think politicians even pay their bills in their entirety? They dont even pay taxes, and worse of all they find clever ways to misdeclare their assets!

What if I tell you that Presidency, Prime minister house, All 4 Governors houses along with thousand other 'VIPs' are not paying their electricity bills for the last 5 years or so.

Pakistan is facing worst sort of power crisis of its history as electricity generation falls to 9,000 mega watts whereas the demand is around 16,000 mega watts.

9000 MW .... think Pakistan needs to ramp up pretty soon on this front ....

Btw peak summer consumption in New Delhi alone touched 5000 MW this year :(

Pakistani Police, Protesters Clash Over Power Cuts

Protesters upset over severe electricity shortages clashed with police for a second day in eastern Pakistan on Tuesday, as the country's main opposition leader used the issue to pressure the U.S.-allied government.

Parts of Pakistan face power cuts of up to 18 hours per day, undermining the country's weak economy and increasing hardship for citizens already facing a rampant Taliban insurgency. Anger periodically boils over into violent protests.

Demonstrators threw stones at police Tuesday in Gujranwala, a major industrial city of some 4 million people in Punjab province. Local television footage showed the police throwing some of the rocks back, lobbing tear gas, and charging the crowd with their batons.

Angry mobs had burned six electricity company offices in the city on the first day of rioting on Monday and set fire to several rooms in a police station, said Gujranwala police chief Ahsan Tufail. Fourteen policemen were injured in Monday's clashes and 20 people were arrested, he said.

Demonstrators took to the streets in mostly peaceful protests in several other parts of Pakistan on Tuesday, including Faisalabad in Punjab and Peshawar, the main city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The country's main opposition leader, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, lashed out at the government over the electricity shortages.

"The country is facing a severe power crisis, but the government is sleeping and doing nothing for the last 15 months over this issue," Sharif told reporters in Bahawalpur, another city in Punjab.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani sought to deflect blame away from his government in an address to parliament on Monday, pointing his finger at the United States. He said that the U.S. should help Pakistan solve its energy crisis if it wanted better ties.

Pakistan and the U.S. are nominally close allies in the war against Islamist extremists, and Islamabad has received billions of dollars in military and civilian aid over the past decade, including money to help the country's energy

well yes, i believe shortfall at this time is approx. 7,500 mW.......in 3 years, my friends, the government has done NOTHING. Literally NOTHING.

even IPPs deal was mired in corruption and controversy....

these azzholes can't get ANYTHING right in life. They have no discipline and no sense of duty to anyone other than themselves and their bank accounts.

the other problem is Pakistanis themselves....or rather, those Pakistanis who refuse to pay and want everything for free

we need to diversify our power production capabilities; find some viable and alternate solutions. I don't see any change on circular debt problem anytime soon --not under this administration.

Pakistan have sufficient coal reserve and water reserve to fullfill the entire country needs then why the government in pakistan not doing on this area

Common use some brain, this is cuz of huge corruption by Zardaria & Co. I can tell you during Mush era, even in Summer loadshedding happens once in a week or 2 & that also for 1-4 hours max(talking about Karachi).

Govt responsible for power crisis: Nawaz Sharif

MULTAN: Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif said on Tuesday that the federal government was involved and directly responsible for the power crisis that has hit the country.
Sharif was speaking to the media in Bahawalpur after condoling the death of PML-N MPA Mumtaz Jajja, who had died due to dengue fever in Lahore.
He said the government had to “face the music” and should face punishment by the public for creating a crisis.
The PML-N chief had earlier directed the party to support street protests.
The surge in prolonged loadshedding has disrupted life in many cities as load shedding has crossed 12 hours in Southern Punjab.

in my village, i talked to my folks yesterday, and they said electricity goes for 8 hours at a stretch, and once it goes, you dont expect it to come before 8 hours!!!.

Now this electricity problem can never be solved by short term solution. This is because of the policies of the Governments of 15 years before, now what this , or the next govt. can do is to formulate a policy or initiate projects keeping in mind the demand of 25 years into the future.

Water has not been properly utilized, more crude oil should be imported, refined in Pakistan, then given to power production companies. More electricity, more trade offices and industry, more industry hence more money, more money translates to more oil, which in turn gets more electricity from thermal sources.
But this can be expensive, wind, tidal power, dams, solar is the way to go. In addition to collecting taxes, and efficient management of the electric supply, and more power saving measures.

Destroying more grid stations is not going to help.

A rally from Rawalpindi to Islamabad Jinnah Avenue, to Larkana, to the PM's property in Multan is going to tun heads, not this.

the circular debt problem could be solved in less than 3 weeks.....

the Central bank of Pakistan should issue 12-14% return treasury bonds to the private sector and to private/commercial banks, which would essentially own a chunk of the Federal government's debt. Those funds could be used to consolidate all outstanding debts owed amongst the energy companies, the electric companies/producers etc.

mark my words --- in 3 weeks this problem could be solved; instead of operating at BARELY 50% capacity --Pakistan would be seeing close to 75-80% capacity --meaning load-shedding would be decreased drastically and the results would be felt immediately.

(meaning industry would not be laying off workers, seeing spiralling out of control overhead costs, and NOT running at 50% capacity as well --meaning they could fulfill their orders and make more money --meaning more money to bring home and more disposable income to consume)

Wow!!!!!!!!!

what a no-brainer.....the people in charge of Pakistan are not fit enough to run a brothel -- let alone a country.
