Eurasian Union for Central Asia, Kazakhstan has already joined.
Former Soviet Central Asia and Russia have much in common, as both were part of the Romanov empire and later became part of Soviet Union. These parts of Central Asia have been thoroughly Russianized, some city dwellers speak nothing but Russian. But since the fall of Soviet Union, there is centrifugal force pulling them away. What ex-KGB aparatchiks (except Kyrgyzstan) in power plan and do now in all these states, may have little bearing on their future. People's voice will be heard only when there are much more representative govt.'s in the region. Till that transition happens, every move now, including this Eurasian union is being built on very very shaky foundation. The main stumbling block of this proposed Eurasian Union:
- resurgent ethnic nationalism in all these states
- colonial memory from earlier Soviet periods, forced collectivization, settling of nomad populations and resulting famine
- increasing religiosity as a part of the atheist population slowly revert back to their former religions
- increasing number of Muslims with high birth rate may turn this union into a majority Muslim state, already Russian army has disproportionate percentage of Muslim recruits, mainly from Kavkaz (caucasus) and Tatar populations
- Ukraine may not join, as it may go with EU
- as before no warm water port, which makes it dependent on China and Southern states
So for now, we have to wait for political evolution and more democratization. This will then help the people in these states find their voice and help them determine the future direction of their states.
