This does not agree with the earlier statement that South Africa wanted to buy.

2014 puts Pakistan on map of defense production

KARACHI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- The four-day 8th International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS-2014), which concluded at the Expo Center in Karachi on Thursday, put Pakistan on the map of defense production.

Russia has participated for the first time in the IDEAS-2014. During the event, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday, Pakistan and Russia expressed their willingness to expand cooperation in trade of defense technology and defense products.

Around 232 defense companies from across the globe presented their defense products like tanks, aircraft, Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs), ammunition, ship building and communications- related equipments.

A total of 88 delegations from 47 countries participated in the four-day exhibition which made it one of the biggest defense product show in the region.

The delegations from China, Qatar, Turkey, S.Korea, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, and Sudan appreciated the turnout at the IDEAS-2014 and termed it a meaningful step toward achieving self-sufficiency in defense production for Pakistan.

China set up the biggest pavilion at the Karachi Expo Center, followed by Turkey.

The government of Pakistan used the exhibition to showcase its defense production, besides providing top weapons and ammunition producers a platform to exhibit their produces to the prospective customers.

Pakistan showcased its indigenously developed products including battle tank Al-Khalid, JF-17 Thunder Fighter Aircraft, Armored Personnel Carriers, and missile boats at the event.

Federal Minister for Defense Production Rana Tanveer Hussain said during the event that Pakistan was looking to purchase defense-related machinery and equipments from any country only on the condition of transfer of technology.

Pakistan's Heavy Industry Taxila and Norus Company of Turkey signed an agreement, according to which, the Turkish company will provide B-armed technology to the Pakistan's state-owned company to make seven bullet and low-intensity bomb-proof vehicles.

Nigerian and South African governments took interest in Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder aircraft. Pakistan-made training aircraft Mushaq is already being used by Saudi Arab, Amman, Qatar and now Iraq has also acquired these aircraft from the South Asian country.

The participants hailed Pakistani defense equipment, terming them as high quality products which are on a par with international standards.

One of the participants from Germany, Rohde & Schwarz, famous for its quality wireless communications products, launched its latest state-of-the-art Oscilloscopes and also revealed its world' s fastest Signal and Spectrum Analyzer FSW at the IDEAS-2014. The company attracted several senior officials from defense and private sectors as well as several foreign delegates from Europe, Middle East and Africa.

On the final day of the four-day defense exhibition, Pakistan- made smart bomb "Takbir" attracted much attention.

Talking to reporters at Karachi Expo Center, Pakistan Air Force 's Zubair Iqbal Malik said the bomb had the capacity and precision to hit accurately its target within only seven seconds and it can be launched from a fighter aircraft.

The smart bomb Takbir, which has a range of 80-100 kilometers, expands its wings as soon as it is launched and makes its way while dodging the hurdles in its way with 250 kg of explosive material.

Saudi defense delegation took special interest in smart bomb Takbir and other defense products like drones, Al-Khalid Tank and F-17 Jet Fighters.

This does not agree with the earlier statement that South Africa wanted to buy.

But if South Africa was interested, they would send their government officials or someone from military establishment.
These people are from a private company.

My thinking too. The "SA government " being a customer does not make sense. They have Gripens and less than a year ago nearly put half of them into storage.

Interestingly the same South African group offers an upgrade package for Mi-35. The so called super hind.

There was a time when Pakistan wanted Gripens, how would PAF maintain is SA Air force can not?
SA doesnt have any major regional threats unlike pakistan so they have a low defense budget thats why the gripens are in storage
