Some tid bids from egale Hannan
The Block II JF-17 is believed to have AESA radars similar to those observed on the J-10B. The integrated avionics, sensors and EW suite is entirely Chinese and is believed to be at the level of Europes best planes. The AESA radar is a slightly smaller version of the one being utilized for the J-10B. The radar is highly sophisticated and its installation is beyond the present capacity at PAC Kamra and will thus require the aircraft to take a trip to Nanjing, China.

The Block II will be the standard version to be used in the PAF with the older Block Is to be retired after the end of production for the first 150 aircraft. This suggests that the structural changes needed to convert the Block Is to Block II standard are significant, suggesting considerable changes to the revised edition. The following are believed to be some of the key changes:

1. AESA radar

2. Comprehensive upgrades for low RCS profile including cockpit glass, RAM paint, refined structure, completely new nose structure for AESA, significant increase in the use of composites and retractable refueling probe.

3. Awaited integration of A-Darter missiles from Brazil / South Africa with HOBS capability and Brazilian HMS.

4. The BVR missile is the SD-10B which has been found more than a match for the AMRAAM-120 C5s. An unknown Meteor class missile is in the works beyond the SD-10Bs.
A significant export order has been secured and an entire squadron is being dedicated for training and familiarization of foreign pilots (Source: Eagle Hannan,).

Contrary to conflicting reports in the media, he believes that the order for the FC-20s were finalized and that this order has increased to 58 planes. Given the recent crisis post-Abbottabad, the PAF is being beefed up in a hurry and the FC-20s will play a critical role in the defence of the Western sector. Given the nature of the mountainous terrain and the inability to use the F-16s, these platforms along with the JF-17 will prove to be of significant deterrence value. China is believed to be sacrificing its own production requirements to meet PAF's needs in a hurry and unbelievable financial terms appear to have been extended.

These FC-20s are a highly lethal version of the original and incorporate AESA radars, a high degree of composite use, low observability features and an advanced integrated avionics suite. The wide HUD visible on the J-11s are also believed to have been utilized. In Eagle Hannan's update, he notes that the wings have been modified and include over 50% composite use. He also makes the surprising claim that the canard fore-planes have been modified. Both these factors indicate a significant structural and aerodynamic revamp that would require significant changes even in the FBW.Such a revamp was already suspected given the canted nose and the DSI bump.

The same source also indicates that the plane (FC-20) has been praised by pilots and capable of incredible maneuvers including the Cobra so famously performed by the FLANKERs. He notes that FC-20 not only performs this maneuver but also performs it better, recovering significantly faster. While this maneuver is not of great military importance, the maneuverability and Fly-By-Wire (FBW) maturity this indicates, suggest that the FC-20 is a well-evolved and lethal machine.

Direct competed to European fighters means gripen and ef2000 and tornado
by the way retirement of first fifty when 150 block 2's are complete means a very big modification in body i hope that a 2 years ago some article indicated that twin blades at top of plane instead of one like in f35 may be integrated makes aircraft sexy!!

i remember a video when the zuhai team was interviewed by the chinese media and the paf high ranking official that went with the demo team [ he wears glasses] said that jft was so easy to fly that we dont 'really' need a dual seater trainer jft version for conversion

cobra maneuver does not prove that FC-20 is well evolved its a long process for a fighter Jet to be well evolved the only example that is spanked time and again is F-16, Mirage, Flanker, unfortunately FC-20 can't get into that list not so soon. It has to do though many tests trials and live exercises, it has to be taken to the edge of extremes a thousand times before it proves its lethality.

Twin Seat JF-17 Back On

A Pakistani official stated that the Pakistan side has elected to proceed with the development of a twin-seat version of the Chengdu FC-1 or JF-17 in Pakistan service. A CATIC official refused to comment on this development. The Pakistan Air Force’s requirement for a twin seat version of this fighter was first noted to the author by Pakistan Air Force officials in 2004. However, subsequent reports have noted that China was not interested in such a twin-seat version of the FC-1. The Pakistani official at the Dubai show stated, however, that Pakistan has elected to pay for the development of the twin seat version, and that is now proceeding. This official explained that as Pakistan is sharing in the full spectrum of production, usage and sales of the JF-17, that it therefore requires the twin seat version to fully exploit this aircraft. The twin seat version will be used to support training missions and will also be developed into a dedicated attack model. This same official noted that Pakistan will only purchase the Chengdu J-10 fighter, which is therefore of less industrial interest to Pakistan. Other sources have noted that Pakistan intends to purchase an initial force of 40 J-10 fighters

Pakistan to buy JF-17 Fierce Dragon fleet from China

Pakistan to buy JF-17 Fierce Dragon fleet from China

China will start to provide Pakistan with 50 of the new generation of Fierce Dragon fighter jets, an anonymous Pakistani defense official was reported as saying.

According to the official, the fighters will be equipped with state of the art avionics in contrast to the country's current fleet of 30 fighters installed with obsolete Chinese-made systems.

On the other hand, the US-based Aviation Week points out that the Pakistani Fierce Dragon fleet is still in an initial stage and adds that South Africa and Italy have shown interest in assisting Pakistan to upgrade its fighter jets. However, the anonymous official said the priority would still be reserved for China.

While Aviation Week speculates that training of pilots and maintenance personnel should be a more urgent priority for the Pakistani air force, the country's military said its Fierce Dragon combat squad was already close to combat capability, which was obviously superior to the F-16 A/B fighter jets the country imported from the United States.

Officially named the JF-17, the Fierce Dragon is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft. It has been jointly developed by China and Pakistan with an aim to cut Pakistan's reliance on the air forces of western countries, Chinese media said.

Hi, in the latest Air Forces Monthly issue it was also mentioned that the PAF was paying for a dedicated 2-seater trainer/attack variant of the JF-17.

However, a PAF official mentioned that there was no rush, as the PAF had operated other platforms for years (A-5, F-7PGs) before getting dedicated 2-seater trainer of those variants. Also given the advanced JF-17 simulators available, and more experienced pilots flying the JF-17, the trainer version can take a back seat. The PAF should concentrate on Block II, and inducting more JF-17s as soon as possible.

Italian Grifo S-7 fire-control radar has 25 working modes and a non-break-down time of 200 hours.

A “focused interference system”, that can directionally beam energy is included and creates the same impact as a large electronic warfare airplane in that particular direction. In comparison, only recent combat aircraft like the Rafale and the F-22 have anything similar. Going back half a generation to the F-18E/F and F-16 E/F, these planes do not come with anything similar.
With Link-16 type networking and DRFM or similar equipment on the FC-1s, networked with Eireyes and F-16s, the effectiveness of the EW system as a whole is likely to be a good notch higher than their counterparts. Also to note is China’s familiarity with Russian equipment, particularly radars and modern AAMs; these seem to suggest that Chinese EW is likely to be considerably effective against Russian (and for Pakistan, Indian) aircrafts and missiles.

Did we ever get an good answer as to what the focused interference system is? … … I am reading a bit on the applications of DRFM jamming and I am thinking the two are the same thing or very much related. Any thoughts?

Can Cobra maneuver be done without TVC engine?
