China to expedite 50 JF-17 kits for Pakistan

By Greg Waldron

China will expedite the delivery of 50 Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) JF-17 Thunder aircraft production kits to Pakistan, part of Islamabad's 150 firm orders for the single-engined fighter.

The Pakistan air force has confirmed the expedited delivery but declined to comment on the specific timing, or when the new aircraft will become operational. However, media reports have suggested that Pakistan hopes to receive the kits within the next six months.

The air force said that 30 JF-17s are now operational, up from 18 in early March. It also confirmed that it has firm orders for 150 of the type. This is 100 more than in November, when the China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation said Pakistan had signed for 50. The JF-17 is 52% produced by the PAC.

Pakistan hopes to buy up to a total of 200 JF-17s to replace a number of types, such as the Chengdu F-7, Dassault Mirage III and Mirage 5, and the Nanchang A-5, the last of which was decommissioned in April.

May 19/11: Shortly after American special forces killed Osama Bin Laden in a unilateral raid 40 miles from Islamabad, Pakistan announces a wide swath of major defense projects with China. The most consequential is that the deep water port of Gwadar in western Pakistan will be run by its paymasters, the Chinese government. Pakistan also wants the Chinese to build a naval base there, and no doubt expects to have its own ships use that facility alongside the Chinese PLAN.

The flashiest aspect of the announcements involve the JF-17, with reports that China will be sending Pakistan 50 improved JF-17 fighters, with upgraded electronics. To date, JF-17s have rolled off of Pakistani manufacturing/finishing lines, but these will reportedly involve more Chinese manufacturing to speed delivery, arriving within 6 months. Reports say that China is financing the deal, though they differ on the terms, and how much of the cost China is absorbing. Some reports paint the fighters as more or less a gift.

The interest in a batch of 50 more JF-17s isn’t a surprise, nor are the planned improvements (vid. Dec 22/10 entry). If deliveries do complete in that time frame, the end of 2011 will see Pakistan with over 92 serving JF-17s. India’s comparable Tejas will have over a year to go before the 1st squadron is formally inducted, and will still be waiting to conduct qualification tests of key weapons. The question now is that how much weight is lost and how much payload is increased
current payload is estimated to be some where near 3600 Kg
so how much weight can we reduce there by increasing the payload..
BTW Nabil bhai has already stated that composites will increase from 8% to 30-40%
And what about WS-13 or RD-93B??

FC-1 Xiaolong Project a Flagship of China-Pakistan Friendship
2011-05-26 08:49:59 CRIENGLISH.com Web Editor: Mao

The FC-1 Xiaolong fighter jets, which are jointly developed by China and Pakistan, are seen by many as a symbol of the China-Pakistan friendship.

CRI reporters have visited the assembly plant in Pakistan where the jets are being produced and had a firsthand look at the joint project.

Shuang Feng has more.

The FC-1 Xiaolong fighter jets are known as GF-17 Thunder in Pakistan.

They are assembled at the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, or PAC in Kamra, the world's seventh largest fighter jets assembly plant.

Air Vice Marshal Arshad Khan is the Managing Director of Kamra Avionics & Radar Factory at the PAC.

He says the success of this project lays in the willingness of Chinese original equipment manufacturer to transfer its know-how to the Pakistani side.

"When we talk about the technology transfer, it is a model that the Chinese are helping us, transfer the Know-how that they have and to reduce the cost and have a real participation. So it is a good flexibility to help us to develop our aviation industry and benefit from the previous existing development project."

He says Pakistan hopes the technology transfer will be completed by next year.

35 Chinese engineers are in the PAC to train Pakistani workers and providing technical assistance.

Gao Yan is the Chief Representative in Pakistan from China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporatioin.

"The process of the production of FC-1 Xiaolong fighter is smooth, though there are still some small problems, Pakistani workers can manage the skills and learned very fast. It is not easy for a country without aeronautics infrastructures to build planes, however under the collaboration between experts and companies from both countries, we overcame difficulties and the current production is good. "

Meanwhile, local media reported that Pakistan hopes to receive 50 more Xiaolong fighter jets within the next six months.

The Kamra Aeronautical Complex says the new deal is part of the program to replace the old equipment.

Air Commodore Nudrat Kazmi is the Managing Director of Aircraft Manufacturing Factory in PAC.

"Basically, the new deal has been signed because of the requirements which has been generated by the Pakistan Air Force. The Pakistan air force has gone through a transition period, which the old equipment are being phased out and new equipment are being inducted. This fifty craft are part of that transitional phase. And therefore, it is part of that particular program."

The Pakistan Air Force officially inducted its first FC-1 Xiaolong squadron last year.

For CRI, this is Shuangfeng.
