A Japanese city assembly member is being detained in China on suspicion of possessing stimulant drugs while at Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, Japan Broadcasting Corporation reports.

Assemblyman Takuma Sakuragi, 70, of Aichi Prefecture, reportedly left for China on Oct. 29 for a business trip, and was taken into custody by Chinese authorities on Oct. 31 at the airport.

Japanese Foreign ministry officials said Chinese authorities told them Sakuragi had about 3 kilograms (more than 6 pounds) of illegal drugs — the specific drug was not named — in his suitcase, allegedly found during a customs check on his way back to Japan, according to Japan Times.

"At present, the local authorities are going through legal procedures to put him on trial," a Japanese official told South China Morning Post. Sakuragi has denied the charges, according to NHK.

South China Morning Post has more:

Japanese media quoted a long-time associate of Sakuragi as saying the five-term city politician may have been framed due to his hard-line stance on diplomacy with neighbours China and South Korea.

Tokyo is embroiled in separate territorial rows with Beijing and Seoul, which routinely accuse Japan of failing to atone for its military aggression during the first half of the 20th century.

China carries out harsh sentences for drug smugglers. In 2010, four Japanese citizens were executed in China on drug smuggling charges, according to Japan Times.

Being framed or not, he is probably a far right-winger and a descendant of the WWII war criminal.

China will likely execute him to teach Japan a lesson.

Shows you're a complete idiot. Would you defend a drug dealer?
No, but death penalty should only been given to capital crimes such as murder or child rape. BTW I admit that is a general debate one may ask what punishment to what sin.

Haven't you see what CD has said? No one could save him, his days are numbered.
this is why I got when google. According to the finding, he carried "stimulants" with him when heading back home. And as anyone is aware stimulants are not necessarily well-known as hard core drugs.

Japanese Local Assembly Member Arrested in China for suspected having illegal drug (JIJI) Unbelievable! | Finance GreenWatch

Suspect ,Takuma Saakuragi

Nagoya, Nov. 15 (Jiji Press)–Takuma Sakuragi, a 70-year-old member of the city assembly of Inazawa, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, has been arrested in China for alleged possession of stimulants, officials at the local assembly’s secretariat said Friday.

The secretariat was informed of his arrest by the Japanese Foreign Ministry on Thursday afternoon. Sakuragi has been denying the charges against him, the officials said.

On Oct. 29, Sakuragi left for China on business related to a trading company he runs.

He was arrested at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangdong Province, southern China, on the night of Oct. 31 when he was about to return home, according to the secretariat and the ministry.

The secretariat lost contact with Sakuragi after being informed by him around 9 a.m. on Oct. 31 that he would be absent from a public duty scheduled for the day.

What?

You know that "stimulants" refers to a category of drugs, that include legal ones like caffeine, and illegal ones like Cocaine and Meth?

And he was carrying 6 pounds of the stuff.

Regardless of whether there are any Diplomatic tensions or not, if he is convicted of carrying such a large amount then he is dead.

No matter what, China will utilize this opportunity to humiliate Abe's right-wing government by executing one of his right-wingers.

No one can save his ***, wait to get shot by PLA.

execution ? on a drug possession charge ?

you do realize even the US doesn't have the balls to do something like that on a diplomat. It really isn't a question of balls either......execution of diplomats have very little precedence in the modern world...even more so when the reason is as flimsy as this.

China will get kicked around till kingdom come if you pull of some stunt like that...:P

Who said he is a diplomat?

He is a Japanese city assembly member, who came to China on a business trip.

If he thinks he somehow qualifies for diplomatic immunity, he is welcome to bring that up at his trial.

This problem is every where, include both Chinese and Japanese, could involved in to business. Some Tuesday China links:

China Digital Times reports that demand for the narcotic heroin in China (including Macau and Hong Kong) has risen so sharply that drug traffickers are struggling to keep up. One report that CDT notes says that 90 percent of heroin smuggled through the so-called Golden Triangle is shipped to China. The UN estimates that China and Taiwan account for 70 percent of all heroin consumption in East Asia...
