(Reuters) - Japan said on Wednesday it was unable to immediately provide decommissioned patrol ships to Vietnam amid heightened tensions in the South China Sea as its own coastguard was stretched by surveillance activities.
As tensions mount between China and other claimants to the South China Sea, countries such as Vietnam and the Philippines are rushing to bolster their maritime patrols.

Japan, itself locked in a bitter territorial spat with China, in March agreed to dispatch a research team to Vietnam as a step toward providing it with patrol ships.

Asked about the possibility of providing used patrol ships to Vietnam to expedite the process, Prime Minister Shinto Abe told parliament: "Surveillance duties are getting heavier for the Japan Coast Guard."

"Regrettably, our country is not in a situation where we can retire all the vessels that have reached such age."

Patrol ships from China and Japan have been playing cat and mouse in waters near disputed East China Sea islets, raising fears of an accidental clash between the world's second- and third-largest economies.

In the South China Sea, scores of Vietnamese and Chinese ships, including coastguard vessels, have continued to square off around a Chinese oil rig in contested waters.

Vietnam said earlier this week a Chinese boat rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing vessel not far from the oil rig, while China's official Xinhua news agency reported the vessel capsized after "harassing and colliding with" a Chinese fishing boat.

In an interview with Reuters last week, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duck Dam said Hanoi was keen to have aid from Japan and other countries to help manage its coastline and waters.

Vu Duck Dam. Did Reuters misspelled the name?

Japan armada is superior plus Japan will have US and NATO support. Chinese Armada will sink like a paper boat.

I won't be arguing more since you can't constructively discuss...this sink, paper boat and blah is something lil boys talk mend your fence before you get -ve rating for offtopics, learn and come back. Topic is petrol boats from japan to vietnam [which is not coming in near future] end of discussion for China vs japan open a new thread [and see how vs thread closes down].

Yes, perhaps US and NATO will send Japan 10,000 past expiration date MRE just like they did with Ukraine. Didn't we just seen a live demonstrate on "US/NATO support" against a major country barely a few weeks ago? People has such short memories.

Anyways, this is basically a diplomatic way of saying "we are not sticking our neck out for this business, you are on your own".

Indeed. I thought his name was Tan Dung.

Our untarnished record in the South China Sea suggests otherwise. If your 'mongol cousins' (as you would like to think - they actually find the idea of a genetic connection with you repulsive) are looking for punishment, we will be happy to smash their fleet into debris, just as Venice pummeled your 'navy' of floating yurts into the seafloor in the Battle of Lepanto.

Actually I'm just talking factually. Japan+US+NATO fleet dominates all seas. If China dares to go out of its box. We know how to put her back in her box and give a good beating so she won't do it again. Are you trying to say Chinese navy is stronger than navy of the allies? Because that what I'm getting from your msg. Vietnam has NOTHING to worry in this regard.

Japan is not Ukriane, I hope China makes the mistake thinking their neighbors are "Ukriane". Unlike Russia, China is surrounded by hostile, POTENT, and capable enemy armies.

I have a solution: Japan can donate warships instead and Vietnam re-paints and declares them as patrol vessels.
