The airfield in Yonaguni is only 2000 meters, it can only be expanded by taking it into the sea.

Sounds good. As you can see, I've been following the events in the area and I've been hoping for more solid developments there.

Yonaguni will need to reclamation projects , this should increase the area that can accomadate larger planes such as P3s, P-1s, as well as , hopefully, F-15s, F-2s. Tho I think what is needed is develop our coastal radars there. We need to deploy 4-5 batteries of Type 12 Anti Ship Missile Launchers, that should negate any naval threats. And will help the JMSDF 1st Escort Fleet's duties.

Plus, if we go ahead with land reclamation, then imagine the job opportunities for the local folks in Yonaguni Island ! A win-win scenario for the civilians and the military. :)

Really impressive that you collected so much info on this, dude !!

Yes, the airfield in Yohaguni needs an extra 1000 meters (much of it into the sea by land reclamation) in order to accommodate all kinds of planes. That airfield is so close to Senkakus that it would give Japan a nice logistical boost and certainly faster interception.

Oh, I've been collecting info into my Senkaku folders for years, I have a ton of files. I've recognized the strategic importance of Yonaguni a while back, so I collect everything I find about it.

@Carlosa @Indos if you haven't got your copy already, you can get that book for free (legally), just click on the PDF link:

The Tools of Owatatsumi - ANU Press - ANU

It talks about that surveillance system in depth. I'm busy haven't got time to check it out.

Unforgiving geography indeed. The PLAN's nuke sub fleet is constrained, their exit point to the Pacific Ocean is only a small gap between the Philippines and Taiwan, which can easily be monitored by Japan+US (one of the reason the US won't let Taiwan fall into PRC hands too easily). Their exit point to the Indian Ocean is similarly constrained.

I'll add one more map to your list:

The PRC might want to modify its 10 dash lines again and turn it into an 11-dash-lines to protect their Sub base in Sanya . Right now, the first dash line is nowhere near that Sub base which means that by default, VietNam's EEZ boundary goes right up to the mid point between Da Nang and Hainan Island, which is only 70 miles away from the Sanya submarine base.

So with approval from Viet Nam, the US/JMSDF can install sensors right up to 70 miles from the PLAN's Sanya submarine base, without infringing China's sovereignty/EEZ. This means that not only can the US/JMSDF monitor when the PLAN nuke sub enters the Pacific/Indian Ocean, they can monitor those subs just right outside the Sanya base exit.

Carlosa, you live in Da Nang, don't you want assistance from JMSDF+US to install sensors to safeguard your hometown from a tsunami? But who knows, the Viet military might have already allowed these "tsunami early warning" devices to be deployed.

Meanwhile, Chinese ships and aircraft continue regular incursions around the Japanese-controlled Senkaku islands to the north-east of Taiwan, to asssert claims of historical ownership. As recently as last year, Chinese fighter jets have jostled American patrol planes in the area.

With all this Chinese aggression, or “asssertiveness” as it’s often more diplomatically put, you might be forgiven for thinking that the naval and air wings of the People’s Liberation Army have the Americans and Japanese on the backfoot, unwilling to risk a clash that the Chinese seem all too ready to escalate.

'Fish Hook' line

But a new study by two Australian experts suggests it is the Chinese who are cornered...

The red part pretty much sums up what the PDF keyboard warriors has been saying here. But beneath the surface:

Ha ha, very well said; thank you for the link.

Indeed, Danang has already installed a tsunami warning sensor network during the last 2 years so the deed is done.

No matter where they turn, those chinese strategic subs are being tracked, whether they like it or not.

Nice pics. I've been following what's going on in the Andamans, nice build up there. If the chinese navy somehow enters the Indian Ocean, they'll have a nice "reception" in the Andamans area. :enjoy:
You mean like the way they tried to tail our fleet with a submarine and we forced them to surface a few years back?

The PLAN usually is constrained to the vicinity of the Taketomi islands if they need to reach the Pacific Ocean. This is where the JMSDF dedicates the 1st Escort Flotilla and we do track them when they cross this area. Other than that they can't access the Pacific deep in Japanese waters because anywhere else is highly patrolled by our Fleets.

This is why Japan is building a larger military base by Yonaguni, specifically for the JASDF and JMSDF.
In a Taiwan scenario, if the Japanese make a move, those tiny islands will not survive an hour of air and missile strikes. Playing recon games with indefensible forward positions in peacetime is fine but in wartime when they are reduced to rubble absolutely nothing can stop PLAN from breaking through to plant sea mines in Tokyo Bay.

A few years back is nothing comparing to what's going there now.
Cheers.
Ah I see. Now Modi is in charge and India is a shupa powa! :yay:

No matter where they turn, those chinese strategic subs are being tracked, whether they like it or not.
Unfortunately for you, the tracking suddenly stops working as soon as the shooting begins :) Little islands can hardly stop a PLAN amphibious assault. Only USA benefits by putting defenseless little island nations on the front line against China!

That is why China build large number of strategic guided ballistic missile (more than a thousands)with range more than 1500km. The missile will overwhelm any air defense system. That excluded decoy and cruise missile.

In a major war, those airfield so near senkaku and Taiwan is in serious trouble.
