What's new

Italy is done with it...mass deportations start

Also so many flow past initial entry area to deeper european countries. That puts a big hole in this being migration for safety/sanctuary as opposed to purely economic reasons (to countries that have most lax, accessbile welfare structure). Its literally welfare shopping basically in so many cases...this is the problem that merkel, sweden and few others really opened up for exploitation (as we see by sheer economic migrants posing with fake id as syrian etc).

You are right, this unfairly stresses and punishes genuine refugees from syria and libya warzones. Whole intake system has become a huge mess and has to be sorted out and reformed.
Plus allowing refugees freely helps people traffikers make a killing if rejection rises they stop making money particularly from central africa plus i think the plan of Germany to invest in countries with economic issues instead of allowing unskilled migrants is better that will benefit both parties better and it will also help skilled workers who now have tougher checks on them than unskilled one,s i know a Pakistani phd student who faced delays when he had to travel from Spain to Italy due to such a strict visa procedure post migrant crisis he was later heavily compensated though :D
Plus i think Trump in whitehouse means a divorce of US and EU establishments we will not see another Iraq style united effort in the region

I would also like to see this data. Its unfortunately wrapped up in so much political cheap scoring by both sides...the truth gets hidden. From what I perceive (not sure if true or not), there was very little rejection rate during the main influx years compared to what is going to happen this year forwards (which will include greater processing of the migrants already in Germany).

Merkel is probably doing her best to get two birds with one stone, appeal to the moderates/neutrals in upcoming elections (by showing she can be more "balanced" on the issue) and also genuinely help to counter the security threat posed by such a sudden impulse from the refugee/migrant influx over the last few years.

This year and the next one are going to be quite interesting and crucial. I guess lets see what happens.

This may be a good starting point

Is there anywhere that states the number of rejected asylum applications/deportations per year?
You'ld need to compare applications and asylum granted, I guess. Or look at decisions.

That is very sad thing to hear that it has come to that. Erosion of the dignity of human life means the situation has frayed nerves to such an unbearable point.

I am glad Italy is taking steps. Sweden and quite possibly Germany may not be so lucky. I don't know which of those 2 is going to be the canary in the coalmine (and there is still time to prevent it) but it must be a sobering lesson to Europe as a whole when the catastrophe happens if it happens down the road.

hah.... I love this.. words cant describe it. Can't you see your a joke?

An indian who lives in canada, talking about how italy is taking the right steps to deport immigrants.

When the country in gripped in fear and does not know what to do then it will take drastic measures to safeguard it's interests.
Italy has done just that.
America has set a precedence, Europe will most likely follow it.

Seems for India's population size, number of applications is pretty less and the acceptance rate is also even more worse.
May be there are more illegally then legally.
