In 1950s when states were reorganised on linguistic lines,Hindus of Punjab claimed their mother tongue was Hindi saying Punjabi is nothing but a dialect of Hindi with little to no literary history.if I remember right,even Nehru dismissed Punjabi as a dialect of Hindi..I too agree with it(inspire of my zero knowledge of Punjabi) because we can see how pakistanis and indian Punjabi's can so effortlessly speak Urdu or Hindi.punjabis please answer without any language bias.

Punjabi is as old as Hindi... across subcontinent the language dialect changes a bit every 100 KM or so... The problem with some languages is that their recording started a bit late...But the languages existed ... so no Punjabi is not a dialect of Hindi... its has its own vernacular system... its own grammar....

Punjabi is a dialect of Hindi ! :o:

@LoveIcon @KingMamba @Gufi ! :undecided:
what heresy is this... Have you ever wondered what is not a Hindu derivative. Soon they will claim Latin is derived from their language. I have never even heard this before :o:o_O
As far as theories go I guess any theory can be made. But in truth these things hold no real value except idiots fighting over it :pop:

It is surprising that you people are not even aware of such a theory...there was even bad blood between hindu punjabis and sikhs over this issue in 1950s..it was one of the reasons behind sikhs disappointment with the Indian state in those days(of course Punjab was eventually granted a language status) don't you people proudly say that Urdu and Punjabi are almost same?

actually we say they are similar but we always recognise that Punjab has a very proud heritage which includes its language. Hindi and urdu are similar also but does not make them same. Do not know what is with this Delhi centric death grip on claiming that everything originates from Hindi or its culture....

There is a difference between how an educated person speaks and an illiterate villager speaks but they both speak the same language..similar is the case between punjabi and Hindi/Urdu.I read you don't even have Punjabi as a language in schools..that itself shows you consider Punjabi a cheap version of Urdu..Punjabi would have got the same treatment in India too had it not been for some Sikh zealots..anyway many learnt people in India consider Punjabi just a cheap version of Hindi(like in Pakistan)

The thing with me is most of my questions and arguments appear as trolls but at the same time very few can come up with logical or sensible counter arguments...it won't be enough to say Punjabi is different..one should come up with valid linguistic points like grammar and vocabulary to prove it.

Today Haryanvis hindus of then undivided Indian punjab said that. Which is true, hayanvi is dialect of hindi. Anyway you should ask this question to Indian punjabis. Because Pakistani punjabi is different from Indian punjabi. Hindi is derived from punjabi like language from ancient migration to ganga land from north west.

You can see videos on youtube, language spoken in Himachal and Indian punjab villages is kind of similar but different from pakistani punjabi.

Simple question.. Do you feel like you are speaking a foreign language when you are speaking Urdu?
