Is India tearing itself apart?

DS, I agree with most of your post except the part about:

However, it must be noted that there was an unwritten agreement between Nehru and Jinnah that neither country would use the name "India", and by the time Jinnah realised his mistake he could do nothing more than acquiesce.

I don't know where you got this from!

As far as I am concerned, the IVC is just a part of the ancient Indian civilization (the region) and not the whole of it. This civilization had a spread up to Cambodia (see Angkor Wat) and Korea. You see Ramayana being known in Korea for thousands of years. Thailand has a strong influence of the same civilization even now. Just look at the Bangkok airport and you will know what I mean. The Buddhism spread from India to all over Asia. That is another footprint of the civilization.

I think its a shared legacy and trying to exclusively appropriate it is wrong for both India and Pakistan. I agree with AM that it denoted a regional legacy than just the modern Indian state's legacy. But I think everyone already understands it that way only.

As I have repeatedly said, most Pakistanis don't have any affinity to the Indian civilization. They just want to snatch it from India and throw it in the dustbin.

The only civilization they care about is of their invaders and conquerors. The rest is all Jahiliyah. Even Pakistan's founders never talked about pre-Islamic civilizations. Its a new fad that has caught up among a minuscule number on the internet.

Are you confusing Indus/Indic civilisation with Aryan/Vedic civilisation? There is at least a thousand year gap between the end of the Indus civilisation and the Mahabharat war in the Doab region.

We as Pakistanis claim to be the inheritors of the Indus Civilisation Heritage. If as you claim that because the Islamic religion came from arabia, we have no part in this heritage, then it can also be said of the Aryan settlers/invaders, who are definitely foreigners to the land.

While the muslim arabs, turks, persians, and other central asians were assimilated into Indian people, the Aryans maintained their distinct identity, culture, religion, rituals and language, whilst subjugating the majority dravidians in northern India.

So it can be said that while there is some foreign blood mixed with indigenous blood in Pakistanis, the Aryan Brahmins,Kshatriyas and Vaishnavis of Northern India are completely foreign to the land. In other words, they have no basis at all to lay claim on Indian/Indic/Indus Valley civilisation. The best they can do is claim their Vedic/Sanskritic/Aryan civilisation, which has it's origins outside India.

The INdus valley civilisation is pre vedic, pre aryan, and the most conservative estimates suggest the later Harappan phase of the indus valley civilisation ended about 200 years before the Aryan invasion/influx. Therefore do not confuse this civilisation with the spread of the Ramayana epics, written more than a millenia after the end of the INdus valley civilisation.

Angkor wat is cambodia is not a settlement of the INdus Valley civilisation. Small settlements have been found in transoxania, near china, and along the gujrat coast.

It is quite funny that you are mentioning Angkor wat, which was built in the 12th century CE, while the Indus valley civilisation flourished 3000-1700 BCE. How you can confuse the two is beyond me.

Below is the proof.

"Jinnah was under the impression that neither state would want to adopt the British title of "INdia" He only discovered his mistake after Lord MOuntbatten, the last British viceroy, had already acceded to Nehru's demand that his state remain "India".

Jinnah, according to MOuntbatten, "was absolutely furious when he found out that they (Nehru and the Congress) were going to call themselves "India" The use of the word implied a subcontinental primacy that Jinnah would not accept.

It also flew in the face of history, since "INdia" originally referred exclusively to territory in the vicinity of the INdus river (with which teh word is congnate). Hence it is largely outside the republic of India but largely within Pakistan. "

'Three die' in fresh India riot

MNS supporters are alleged to have gone on the rampage
Three people were killed during rioting on Tuesday night in the Indian state of Maharashtra, police say.

The rioting followed the arrest of Raj Thackeray, the leader of the right-wing Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party.

Mr Thackeray is accused of inciting violence against migrant workers. He obtained bail on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, students in the state of Bihar have paralysed rail services in protest at the ill-treatment they say Biharis have received from the MNS.

Pitched battles

Maharashtra police chief AN Roy told the AFP news agency that the three deaths took place in clashes between supporters of the MNS and "outsiders" near the town of Kalyan, north-east of Mumbai (Bombay).

Mr Roy said that a "large" number of police had been deployed to maintain order and he was confident they could contain the violence.

"We have made all preparations," he said.

On Tuesday hundreds of Mr Thackeray's slogan-shouting supporters fought pitched battles with police for hours, causing large-scale disruption in Mumbai.

Taxis and buses were destroyed and more than 500 people detained.

MNS supporters demanded the unconditional release of their leader, who was woken up from his sleep and arrested early on Tuesday morning in a town 400km (250 miles) from Mumbai, where he had lined up a series of public meetings.

He was charged with rioting, preventing government employees from performing their duty and damaging property.

On Wednesday, Mr Thackeray reappeared in court in Kalyan amid tight security and was granted bail.

"He is now a free man. He can go home," a lawyer representing him told reporters.

The court banned Mr Thackeray from speaking in public or talking to the media.

Bihar protest

The MNS has been accused of several attacks on migrant workers in recent months.

Many of them come from Bihar, where rampaging students set fire to coaches of the South Bihar Express at Barh railway station in the state capital, Patna.

The students threw stones, smashed computers, window panes and furniture as part of their protest against Mr Thackeray.

The BBC's Amarnath Tewary in Patna says that police fired in the air to disperse the mob.

Five students were arrested but police say that no one was hurt in the incident.

Our correspondent says protesters stopped trains in many other places and vandalised railway stations.

The Bihar chief minister has now initiated talks with the students in an effort to lower tensions.

The unrest in Maharashtra has forced many migrants to leave their neighbourhoods, but Mr Thackeray has consistently denied inciting it.

Thank you for your post containing Jinnah's opinions on India.

Quite frankly, his reasoning of, "The use of the word implied a subcontinental primacy that Jinnah would not accept", is exactly why on this forum some of us have protested the usage of the word, and how it has confused all references to the region, and has specifically confused the historical references.

No doubt that indian has very old history ,they remain under always the rule of invaders
arians,greeks,mongols etc.

Hindu religion is basically off shot of jews. The histrory of hindu religion is not more than 2500BC old.
They both worship cow.they have same mentality financial system to suck the blood of poors.

Hindu population/society is divided religiouly into caste system.
That is the reason many million of hindu converted to islam and christianity and sikhism.

I Think no one want to live with hindu society and demanding always seperate independent land.
Warraich,

Please do not denigrate other faiths and peoples. What you have done there is plain and simple stereotyping, of a vicious kind, and is not welcome.

We do not mind you expressing your opinion on the Taliban, since you have done it respectfully and with civility, please exercise that same respect while conversing with, and talking about, our non-Muslim members.

I agree with AM.

Please refrain from bashing any religion, especially that of our Indian friends. Hinduism is a religion to which more than 1/6th of mankind subscribes, and deserves due respect.

As it is, you did not make any substansive points, but just showed your own ignorance.

Hardly any proof. It only shows that Jinnah didn't want India to keep the name which we already know.

Nowhere is there any mention of unsaid understanding. At best it was Mr. Jinnah's perception or preference.

Ultimately it was left to the leaders of the two countries to decide what they wanted for their respective countries.

No, I am not confusing anything.

We as Pakistanis claim to be the inheritors of the Indus Civilisation Heritage. If as you claim that because the Islamic religion came from arabia, we have no part in this heritage, then it can also be said of the Aryan settlers/invaders, who are definitely foreigners to the land.

That is not correct. Show me one such statement from even your founding father. He talked exclusively of Islamic heritage. The whole idea of Pakistan was based on Islam and Muslims needing a separate homeland. The fact that it included migration of non-Muslims from Pakistan and Muslims in the reverse direction and Bangladesh as part of Pakistan proves it very clearly.

Just because the IVC got discovered later on, are you trying to change your inheritance which was earlier limited to Islamic one only for some reason? This whole thing seems to be after thought, isn't it?

The AIT is by no means proven. I don't know why you want to treat it that way. It is getting discredited AFAIK. It was never more than a conjecture by some European historians anyway.

Refer above.

Last six months have been most disturbing on the Indian political scene. As far as the values of integration are concerned they are being attacked very severely by terrorist-communal forces. First, we saw the series of bomb blasts, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Delhi and Malegaon. It was projected by the authorities that all these acts are due to Jehadi Muslim groups that police have succeeded in cracking the network. One outcome of this was the Batla house encounter in which police, bravely killed the terrorists. It put out a version that now the terror ring has been busted and kingpins have been arrested. It is another matter that later the relevant-uncomfortable questions were raised and satisfactory answers to these were not forthcoming. On the top of this the claim that Malegaon blasts were done by SIMI proved to be false as the investigation showed the possibility of ABVP/Bajrang Dal being involved in same.

During the same time two Bajrang dal Activists got killed while making bomb in Kanpur, two activists of Hindu Jagran Samiti were involved in placing the bombs in Thane due to which seven people got injured. During this time again in Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu, the bombs went off near RSS office and as usual the cry of wolf was made, but the wolf here had different shades than what RSS wanted to propagate, as most of those planting the bombs turned out to be Hindus, with affiliation, which are not difficult to guess.

During the same time the anti Christian violence was orchestrated and launched in Orissa to begin with, later on spilling to Karnataka. The pretext first was that Christians have beaten Swami Laxmananand (December 2007) and later that Christians have killed the swami. Interestingly a Maoist group claimed to have killed him but the RSS combine stated that they don’t believe in the claim of Maoists, meaning there by that they have the right to decide who the culprit is!

The third tragedy related to the Hindu Muslim violence in Burhanpur, Dhulia and few other places on the slightest pretext of tearing a banner or some such. What is disturbing is the way things are shaping in the country. The anti Muslim hate propaganda, which has been sustained on various myths have gradually been taking he shape of deep rooted perceptions. Earlier lot of planning and bigger pretext was needed to unleash the violence, now even a small pretext suffices to initiate the mayhem. Some of the properties are well marked in advance for destroying. The loss of lives of minorities is many times more than their presence in population.

The stereotyping of Muslim community through reporting of acts of terror has boosted the negative perception of the community in a serious way. At the same time the there is a realization that there are two set of laws, that they will not get justice and that their feeling of insecurity in the society is going up by leaps and bounds. One does not know whether this disturbs the ruling coalition or not. For Muslim minorities to keep faith in the Governemnt in such circumstances is not difficult, it is impossible.

Christian minority was not the target till quite late. As the hate propaganda based on make believe forcible conversions, allurement, insult of our gods, foreign money keep percolating in the society, and a silent sanction for attacking them started building up. Now even a slightest pretext is sufficient to undertake the despicable violence against the community.

This is a clear case as to how already a social mind set has been created, through word of mouth propaganda and media where by the minorities have been demonized and now the violence against them has become the order of the day. Even the global phenomenon of terrorism and local phenomenon has added on to the same and in this case Islamic terrorism, and ‘all terrorists are Muslims’ has been made the fodder of social thinking. As such, starting from Golwalkar, RSS’s formulation that Muslims and Christians are threats to Hindu nation, to the present day, there is a consistent worsening of the level of demonization of minorities.

These entire social phenomenons are raising a deeper question related to our democracy. Democracy not only ensures that are citizens are treated equally it also stands for giving affirmative action for weaker sections of society. As such the litmus test of democracy is the welfare and security of minorities. Here we see that as to how the marginal stream which came up during freedom movement and kept aloof from it, the Hindutva vehicle, RSS, has been successfully working, using the democratic space to abolish, precisely the democratic values which gave it a space to stand. While totally defamed after Gandhi murder by one of its followers, its acceptability began with Jayapraksh Narayan letting it run the movement, which led to emergency and later formation of Janata Party. RSS began by spreading hate against Muslims and Christians, formulated by its founders and penned by its ideologue, M.S. Golwalkar. Golwalkar instructed that Muslims, Christians and Communists are the threat to Hindu nation. The RSS shakhhas kept spreading this ceaselessly and it became a part of social common sense over a period of time.

RSS also planted its swayamsevaks in different walks of social and political life, education, media, police, bureaucracy etc. Once its political child, Jana Sangh became part of Janata party, it ensured that large number of swaymsevaks become part of media establishment. And later during NDA regime, this game of theirs’ had a field day. Capping these efforts through Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, social engineering got intensified in Adivasi areas. With US administration coining the word ‘Islamic terrorism’ and that propaganda that Madrassas are the dens of training terrorists; RSS completed its indoctrination module.

The deadly poison it spread against minorities first spread hate and created divides in the communities, leading to ‘hate other’, which in turn forms the base of communal violence. Communal violence in Indian context gets assistance from the communalized state apparatus, sections of police in particular leading to polarization of communities and rise to political power of the communal party. The conveyer belt begins from demonizing other and leads to the RSS’s political child becoming politically strong. That’s how a political party which managed two seats in parliament in1984 elections has become formidable electoral force today, knocking the democratic values and imposing the religion based nationalism.

Though not in power in center, its machinations are polarizing the society all over, creating divisions in the society, rampaging the rule of law and paving the way for creeping fascism. What is happening today is reminder of how things happened in Germany, with Hitler leading the carnage. Beginning with hate Jews and then Christian minorities, then Communists and trade unionists paved the way for the stifling atmosphere of fascism, authoritarian state with social base. Today we seem to be helplessly watching a similar situation. While RSS combine is behaving like a rampaging bull, Bajrang Dal planting bombs, its workers carrying arms openly, distributing trishuls en masse, the state ruled by so called secular combine, UPA alliance seems to be a helpless observer, as the whole machinery itself seems to be affected by the communal virus.

Where do we go from here? Opposition to this fascist politics, fighting it tooth and nail cannot be postponed by a single minute. The time has come that all those believing in democracy and welfare of all need to come together and put and end to the politics of hate. Popular front at social and political level is the need of the day. The power seeker political formations may not look beyond their personal gains but the social movements need to put the pressure in the right direction for these political people to hang together before we are hanged separately. It is not just a question of opposition to one political formation. The question is can we let the RSS version of Hindusim destroy the Kabir and Gandhi version of Hinduism and religion? The question is can we let the innocent minorities be the scapegoats for the fascist politics to keep on going? Should we let the democratic space be usurped by those wanting to bring in a nation state in the name of religion?

Whether India will nurture the values of freedom movement and strive for human rights of all depends on us, as in no time in the past the very concept of democracy has been stifled as much as we are witnessing today.

The Failing Idea Of India

As old as the land itself, is perhaps that something called the "idea" of India. We may debate it, but it can not be refuted that this idea is as organic and alive now as the history had once sculptured it. But at the same time, it is no longer as inviting and impressive as it used to be once. The problem is not that the change is drastic but the problem is that the change is adverse. It seems as if heroes and villains of this land have swapped their places. Buddha personified this idea once but now bandits and barbarians have adjusted it to their own frame.

It signified Vaishali once, that grand ancient city which boasted of
being one of the earliest republics known to mankind. But now this idea reminds of Gujrat, the excesses of Maharashtra Navnirvana Sena and the bruised-backs of Bihari labourers. The idea was glorified by Megasthenes or Huen Sang one day but now routine assaults on foreign tourists and chastisement by International media, be it about poverty levels or human rights abuses belies that reputation. Once upon a time Gandhiji was the mentor of this idea but now Modi is. The India that took pride for famed universities and seats of learning once is illiterate beyond remedy now. The prosperity of yore is long forgotten and it is the abject poverty now that rules. The idea envisaged renunciation once, but now it implies corruption. It meant tolerance and diversity but now it is synonymous with Kandhamal massacre and Muslim-bashing. The idea that conveyed a conservative sense of the morality has now been held hostage by gay-rights activists. With degradation of its constituent institutions, principles, people,
places, practices the image that this "idea" of India brought to mind once is deformed and mutilated beyond recognition now.

India is a secular socialist democratic republic in principle. But
off-late, we have seen how India's secularism was put on sale in
Orissa and Karnataka by its own people. The socialism that Jawaharlal Nehru swore by has become meaningless in wake of the starvation-deaths in poverty-stricken districts of Madhya Pradesh and AP. And more so, just a decrepit structure has perhaps remained of the democratic credentials that was so admired by Europe and America. It is an irony that in India people have become powerless while special powers have been gifted away to army and police. Those much-talked about freedoms that Article 19 of the Constitution guaranteed to citizens of India are now subservient to pleasure of the executive. The three pillars that shouldered the high-dome of democracy are now shaking like never-before. The cash-for-votes scam related to July 22 confidence-vote in Parliament and subsequent enquiry and recent expulsion of Babulal Katara and alike is just a heart-breaking
incident. A record 11 MPs have been disqualified from the 14th Lok Sabha so far that is in itself a pointer to the level that Indian
democracy has descended to. When Jharkhand Mukti Morcha chief made public its claim to Chief Ministership of that state by arm-twisting the UPA-coalition, it was enough indicator of an irresponsible legislative that India has come to rely on. And the last nail in the coffin came in the form of a judiciary charged of tainted practices that finds itself now under the microscope of Supreme Court and an upcoming National Judicial Commission. All said and done it is clear that the India is running away as fast from its sacred precincts of democracy and secularism as it is approaching the pinnacle of economic and scientific progress. India may have journeyed towards the moon aboard the Chandrayaan 1 but the real idea of India is in dire-straits and crying for help.

In last sixty-two years the image of India has never perhaps taken
those perilous dives as it is now comfortable with. There was disease, poverty, illiteracy, lack of development sometime back also but the larger image of India was as impressive and unscathed. And now there is progress, special economic zones, space programme, agricultural and economic boom but ironically the long-cherished idea of India is failing. The dark side of the bright picture is becoming increasingly visible. India as a nation is at cross-roads. India as a democracy is in jeopardy. India as a birth-place of different religions and spirituality is given away to riots and violence. The whole idea of India is pleading for mercy.

The intention here is not to churn out a contemptuous critique
against India but the real purpose is to provide some food for thought and introspection. If there are achievements to pride over, there are even larger issues to be worried and concerned about. The slogan of incredible India can not be materialized unless the country gets rid of the numerous ailments affecting its social and political institutions. The parliament will have to restore its own reputation before repairing other pillars of the democracy. Fundamental rights of the citizens are to be safeguarded against all odds. The rule of law as Dicey had once propounded is to be enforced in the real spirit. Criminal politicians, rioters, hooligans who keep on bringing shame to India will have to be thrown into the nether-trenches of hell. Empowerment of the people and restoring the honour of public institutions has to be assured. The fourth-pillar of state viz media is to be strengthened and the right to information has to be made more meaningful. Political parties with communal agenda must be banned and a sense of security extended to sense of security extended to minorities and their conditions improved. The quality of life of an ordinary citizen living in some remote corner of rural India will have to change. But most importantly the real reform has to take place at the level of policy-making with attenuation of an arrogant political and bureaucratic class. There can be no better way of underscoring the real idea of India than reminding the present rulers of India what Mark Twain had said once.

That "India is the country of hundred nations and a hundred tongues, of a thousand religions and million gods- the one sole country under the sun that is endowed with an imperishable interest for lettered and ignorant, wise and fool, rich and poor, bond and free. The land that all men desire to see and having seen once, by even a glimpse, would not give that glimpse for the shows of all the rest of the world combined." Even if nobody listens, let Thakareys and Modis at least take a note please.
