Iran’s Revived Destroyer to Be Equipped with Vertical Launch Missiles: Commander

Commander of the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi said the domestically made Damavand destroyer, which crashed into a jetty back in January last year, will return to service soon with vertical launch missiles installed on it.

when Damavand_2 destroyer will be put in service?
Finally VLS installed, cant wait to see it
end of this Iranian year, 7 more months to go.

What is the point of Damavand-2 having VLS in Caspian Sea if Dena/Sahand/Shiraz etc (in Persian Gulf) will lack it?

But good step forward for Iran regardless, hope to see more advanced radars such as Eagle Eye and Asr and 32+ VLS installed on all future frigates.

well its a start for the others hopefully they will add this option to others as well, i really thing Damavand_2 should have been part of Persian Gulf, its just too advance for Caspian Sea

Products made up north are used as test beds for the South.. Firing anything from Persian Gulf is now international news.. Firing anything in Caspian sea....nobody notices..

This is illogical and doesn't make sense.

Iran has huge naval drills and missile launches in the Persian Gulf virtually every year, how is this an excuse to only equip a Caspian Sea frigate with VLS but not any of the others?

the Caspian sea is rich in oil and it is of great importance for Iran economically.
adding a ship like Damavand to the southern fleet won't change a lot military wise while on the other hand it is a big message for the countries in the region (Caspian sea region).

Virtually none of the oil/gas fields in the Caspian are in Iran's 11% share of the Caspian (or controlled by Iran currently).

But I have read that Iran has previously sought to prevent Azerbaijan etc from exploiting disputed oil/gas fields in the Caspian, so I can understand having a military presence there from that POV.

probably this new VLS is ready today to be embarked, as it was intended that the Damavand-2 was under construction, so the necessary adaptation works can be carried out more easily.

Okay so the 7th (or 6th) Mowj frigate should have VLS also, right? Let's hope so.

very interesting article that goes into detail about the piss poor state of the neglected American minesweeper fleet..

this is huge given that its expected that Iran will mine the crap out of the straight of hormuz at the first sign of conflict.

even mattis admitted that the US would "take casualties" if they weren't given the green light to take pre-emptive measures to stop Iranian mining if a conflict broke out

Iran has thousands of naval mines, but the US Navy's minesweepers can't tell the difference between mines and old dishwashers

  • Recent increases in tensions between the US and Iran have drawn renewed attention to Iran's naval mines, of which it has thousands it could use to shut down sea traffic in the Persian Gulf.
  • The US Navy has specialized mine-hunting ships, but they're long past retirement, and their own crews have doubts about whether they could do their jobs.

The US Navy officer was eager to talk.

He'd seen his ship, one of the Navy's fleet of 11 minesweepers, sidelined by repairs and maintenance for more than 20 months. Once the ship, based in Japan, returned to action, its crew was only able to conduct its most essential training — how to identify and defuse underwater mines — for fewer than 10 days the entire next year. During those training missions, the officer said, the crew found it hard to trust the ship's faulty navigation system: It ran on Windows 2000.

The officer, hoping that by speaking out he could provoke needed change, wound up delaying the scheduled interview. He apologized. His ship had broken down again.

"We are essentially the ships that the Navy forgot," he said of the minesweepers.

Thousands of miles away in the Persian Gulf, another officer, this one assigned to a minesweeper in the Navy's 5th Fleet, offered much the same account. While tensions with Iran seem to escalate by the day, the officer said the four minesweepers based in the Gulf were so physically unreliable that he doubted his superiors would actually send them into action in a crisis. …………………………..

Why laying mines if there are lots of AShM on the table?

Why laying mines if there are lots of AShM on the table?

laying mines creates a death trap for the americans...

if the straight of hormuz is mined, the US has to spend enormous resources and take extreme risks to try and clear them.

they have to take their rickety minesweeper, plus their escorts and park them in a tiny predictable spot. possibly for weeks while constantly taking AShm fire from Iran….

even the most optimistic American commander dreads this possible scenario. as you cannot create a worse tactical situation for the US navy if you tried.
