Iran Vs Israel Science

Most of these Iranian 'Scientists' all left Iran to study in the west, then went back to Iran.

The amount of Iranian students heading to the US/Canada and beyond is astounding.

Well done Iranians for being educated by the west.

It's worth noting though that the Persians were an impressive people before Islam made them stagnant.

I would suggest that they are still a impressive people. Whilst I am no fan of Islam but I think the stagnation had other reasons because Iranian intellectuel vigour continued into the early phase of the Islamic period.

The proposition you make would be as silly as ascribing the Greeks downward trajectory in the last two millenia to Christianity. I think climate, physical geography location had a lot to do with this. In the earlier part of human history semi-arid zone river based cultures made stunning progress. Eygpt - Nile, Mespotamia [Iraq] - Euphrates and Tigris, Harrapa-Indus River [Pakistan] and then spread to nearby regions to Greece etc.

Over time the gravity shifted to the northern damp temperate zone and on which the industrial revolution took off. Iranian were also exposed to continous attacks from Central Asia marauders who laid waste large parts of Iran from which it never recovered.

You do make a decent point, but I think given the size of Greece, it was always going to struggle to maintain an empire. Just like Britain.

I think what makes Iran different, is that it isn't the only case of a nation turning Islamic and then becoming stagnant. We can basically point to all Muslim nations and see them as extremely under performing.

Perhaps one can make an exception for one or two like Malaysia.

There aren't really any nations we can point to that became Islamic and have blossomed.

Islamic culture as it is today is not suitable for modern life.

Selection of Universities
ARWU considers every university that has any Nobel Laureates, Fields Medalists, Highly Cited Researchers, or papers published in Nature or Science. In addition, universities with significant amount of papers indexed by Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE) and Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) are also included. In total, more than 1200 universities are actually ranked and the best 500 are published on the web.
Ranking Criteria and Weights
Universities are ranked by several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution. For each indicator, the highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. The distribution of data for each indicator is examined for any significant distorting effect; standard statistical techniques are used to adjust the indicator if necessary. Scores for each indicator are weighted as shown below to arrive at a final overall score for an institution. The highest scoring institution is assigned a score of 100, and other institutions are calculated as a percentage of the top score. An institution's rank reflects the number of institutions that sit above it.

Alumni
The total number of the alumni of an institution winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals. Alumni are defined as those who obtain bachelor, Master's or doctoral degrees from the institution. Different weights are set according to the periods of obtaining degrees. The weight is 100% for alumni obtaining degrees in after 1991, 90% for alumni obtaining degrees in 1981-1990, 80% for alumni obtaining degrees in 1971-1980, and so on, and finally 10% for alumni obtaining degrees in 1901-1910. If a person obtains more than one degrees from an institution, the institution is considered once only.
Award
The total number of the staff of an institution winning Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine and Economics and Fields Medal in Mathematics. Staff is defined as those who work at an institution at the time of winning the prize. Different weights are set according to the periods of winning the prizes. The weight is 100% for winners after 2011, 90% for winners in 2001-2010, 80% for winners in 1991-2000, 70% for winners in 1981-1990, and so on, and finally 10% for winners in 1921-1930. If a winner is affiliated with more than one institution, each institution is assigned the reciprocal of the number of institutions. For Nobel prizes, if a prize is shared by more than one person, weights are set for winners according to their proportion of the prize.
HiCi
The number of Highly Cited Researchers in 21 subject categories. These individuals are the most cited within each category. If a Highly Cited Researcher has two or more affiliations, he/she was asked to estimate his/her weights (or number of weeks) for each affiliation. More than 2/3 of those multi-affiliated Highly Cited Researchers provided such estimations and their affiliations receive the weights accordingly. For those who did not answer, their first affiliation is given a weight of 84% (average weight of the first affiliations for those who replied) and the rest affiliations share the remaining 16% equally.
N&S
The number of papers published in Nature and Science between 2007 and 2011. To distinguish the order of author affiliation, a weight of 100% is assigned for corresponding author affiliation, 50% for first author affiliation (second author affiliation if the first author affiliation is the same as corresponding author affiliation), 25% for the next author affiliation, and 10% for other author affiliations. Only publications of 'Article' and 'Proceedings Paper' types are considered.
PUB
Total number of papers indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and Social Science Citation Index in 2011. Only publications of 'Article' and 'Proceedings Paper' types are considered. When calculating the total number of papers of an institution, a special weight of two was introduced for papers indexed in Social Science Citation Index.
PCP
The weighted scores of the above five indicators divided by the number of full-time equivalent academic staff. If the number of academic staff for institutions of a country cannot be obtained, the weighted scores of the above five indicators is used. For ARWU 2012, the numbers of full-time equivalent academic staff are obtained for institutions in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech, France, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Saudi Arabia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA etc.

Save as PDF Add to Reading List TEHRAN - Iran ranked 16th in the world in terms of scientific publications and research articles during the period between January 1, 2012 and August 11, 2012, according to Dr. Jafar Mehrad, the president of the Islamic World Science Citation Center (ISC).
Prof. Mehrad made the announcement during an interview with the Persian service of ISNA published on Tuesday, citing the rankings published by the Scopus citation database.

According to him, Iran produced 19,559 scientific publications during the mentioned period, which is unprecedented in the country's history.

The ISC president attributed the achievement to a purposeful investment in higher education and the introduction of new higher education courses and new scientific disciplines.
Mehrad went on to say that Iran ranked 17th in terms of scientific publications in 2011, according to the rankings published by the Scopus citation database.

He added that Iran ranked three places ahead of Turkey in the Scopus 2012 rankings.
The top five countries in the rankings are listed below:

- The United States (282,665 articles)

- China (197,537 articles)

- Britain (81,853 articles)

- Germany (75,635 articles)

- Japan (60,446 articles)

The good part is that Iran has successfully become the 16th most prolific publisher in 2012 so far, outdoing Russia. The next 'targets' are Taiwan and Brazil, in that order, I reckon based on this criterion.

No need to make personal insults. I can call you stupid, quite rightly so, yet I do not. Your posts alone serve that purpose very well. There is no rule, customary or otherwise, in the world for 'per capita' publications ranking. If there were, your point could be considered. And even then, so called "Israel" is outdone by many countries like Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other countries.

This thread is about Israel vs Iran, not Israel vs Switzerland, Sweden, Hong Kong, Singapore....

The only parameter Iran outperforming Israel is total papers, the other factors such as HiCi, citation per document and overall quality of research are dominated by Israel.
