Iran has unveiled its first indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) armed with air defense missiles suitable for aerial combats.

Iran’s Deputy Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami told the inauguration ceremony on Tuesday that the combat drone has successfully passed operational tests by hitting predetermined targets and is now ready to be delivered to the country's armed forces.

He added that the new drone has increased the operational range of the armed forces’ drones and their capability to track, chase, intercept and destroy intruding aircraft.

“The drone is capable of destroying various flying aircraft including fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles and helicopters,” Hatami said.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani on August 24 unveiled two unmanned aerial vehicles, dubbed Karrar-4 and Mohajer-4.

The indigenous Karrar-4 drone has the capability to trace intruding aircraft and is equipped with various air defense capabilities for operation at high altitudes.

Mohajer-4 is a photogrammetric drone capable of carrying out aerial mapping for military and civilian purposes.

Iran unveiled its first domestically-manufactured long-range combat drone, the Karrar (Striker), on August 23, 2010. Since then the country has manufactured a variety of other high-tech surveillance and combat unmanned aerial vehicles.

The Islamic Republic has repeatedly assured other countries that its military might poses no threat to other countries since its defense doctrine is based entirely on deterrence.

Iran on Tuesday unveiled a newly-developed drone which is equipped with home-made hi-tech air-based missiles.
“Drones equipped with air defense missiles have been built” by the Defense Ministry, the Aviation Industries and Aerospace Industries specialists in a move to meet the needs of the Armed Forces, Deputy Defense Minister Brigadier General Amir Hatami announced on Tuesday.

He said that the drones have been prepared to be delivered to the Armed Forces after passing different tests, adding that the new aircraft has increased the operational range and zone of the drones as well as their capability to trace, intercept and destroy aggressive aircraft.

“These new drones are capable of destroying different types of aircraft, including fighter jets, drones and helicopters,” Hatami said.

Yesterday Iran unveiled a new drone named ‘Sadeq 1′ during the military parades at the mausoleum of the Founder of the Islamic Republic, the Late Imam Khomeini, South of the capital.

Sadeq 1 flies at a maximum altitude of 25,000 ft at supersonic speeds. The Iran-made drone has been manufactured for testing radar and electronic systems and training assessments.

Iran has recently made giant advancements in aerospace industries, specially in designing and manufacturing pilotless drones.

In September 2012, Iran announced that it had started using UAVs in its air defense units as part of its broader plans for strengthening the country’s air defense capability.

In December 2013, Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said the IRGC was capable of mounting guided missiles and bombs on its drones.

“We have recently acquired the capability to mount guided and precision-targeting missiles with pinpointing capability and bombs on drones, which is actually among branches of advanced hi-tech in this field,” Jafari told reporters in Tehran in December.

He referred to Iran’s latest achievements in building drones, and said, “Our latest achievement in this regard is a drone which can fly for 30 hours and high-speed engines can increase its range.”

Also in November, Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan announced that Iran’s new drone enjoys unique strategic capabilities, including 30-hour-long flight durability, and had been developed for combat and surveillance missions.

Dehqan said the new drone, ‘Fotros’, had been designed and built by the Iranian Airplane Manufacturing Industries Company affiliated to the Defense Ministry’s Aviation Industries in cooperation with knowledge-based companies and academic centers and on the basis of the needs of the country’s Armed Forces.

“This strategic drone has an operational range of 2,000 kilometers, and can fly to a ceiling of 25,000 feet in altitude for 16 to 30 hours, and these specifications enable it to conduct combat missions in addition to surveillance and reconnaissance missions,” Dehqan said addressing a ceremony held in Tehran to unveil the new drone.

The minister said Fotros could be armed with various types of “air-to-surface missiles and rockets”.

He underlined that the reliability test of the drone had been successfully conducted in the country’s laboratories and test centers, including standard international land tests at low, medium and high speed, adding that test results have been even better than what was expected.

The minister further pointed to the missions which could be done by Fotros in detail, and said the drone could be used for “protecting land and sea borders, monitoring oil pipelines, telecommunication lines and road traffic control, monitoring affected areas during earthquakes, blaze and floods, and environment protection”, adding that it can send “real-time photos and images while it is on a missions”.

He reiterated that Iran’s Defense Ministry had become self-sufficient in designing and manufacturing different kinds of defensive, offensive and surveillance drones.

General Dehqan underlined that Iranian researchers were then working on various models and designs of drones according to the country’s defensive needs.

Also in September 2012, Iran announced that it had started using UAVs for its air defense units as part of its broader plans for strengthening the country’s air defense capability.

Speaking to reporters on the occasion of the National Day of Air Defense here in Tehran on September 3, 2012, Commander of Iran’s Air Defense Unit Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli said Iran had equipped its air defense units with Haazem drones. Haazem is a drone designed and manufactured by Iranian air defense experts in three short, mid and long range models and for air defense missions.

The drone can be used as a target for air defense systems and also for reconnaissance missions.

The UAV can also be equipped with missiles and used for aerial bombardments as well.

What Air to Air missiles? you think 590 kg Hawk missile that Iran modified into AA will fit onto this tiny UAV? not even 85 kg AIM-9 Sidewinder.
This is a joke, shoulder launched ground to air missile on that this
well as i know these MANPADS have battery of few minutes after activate it and lock it in minutes and then fire . how can a UAV will move like man quickly after activate battery and lock the target . seems to me a joke .

This is a joke

The top 2 drones aren't particularly fast or the third not particularly manouvrable (not to mention lacking in A2A sensors): what is it going to hunt and how. Probably only other drones...?

This I can understand (Karrar-4 with bombs and light AShM

Another cardboard and plywood toy ?

Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah has only used unmanned aerial vehicles for reconnaissance purposes–until now.

On Sunday, Hezbollah used unmanned aerial vehicles to bomb al Qaeda-linked militants in northeast Lebanon, the first time the group has used drones with attack capabilities. The group used drones to bomb Nusra Front targets in Arsal, a northeastern Lebanese town nine miles from the Syrian border, according to Iranian news agency Fars.

The report, which includes a video that shows the purported drone strike, shows Hezbollah using a weaponized drone, the first non-intelligence drone used by the group.

Why don't they just buy from Russia now that Russia don't give a f about sanctions

This is what they need 3 squadron for regional balance

Yeah. Something for the I.A.F. to practice on.:enjoy:
We have already seen the performance of the over rated Israeli Defense Forces against small armed Palestinians and against Hazbulah in 2006. Iranian arms should not be underestimated. A close eye should be kept on their arms.

look funny why not air to air missile ?
Iran was using it's UAV's for attacking since 80's in Iran Iraq war & now they have relible MALE UAV's...We on the other side are still testing our abilities to make drones capable of mapping & recon only with endurance of few hours. So let me not explain your true motive behind the word "funny"...that second "flag" of yours is revealing everything.

Same thoughts here brother, but it's difficult than it looks...SU-35 may come with fly away cost of around 70 to 80 million per unite & the rest of infrastructure may take the spendings to 10 billions...Iran don't seem to be in position of such spending since it's already "doing so much" in Palestine,Lebanon,Syria,Iraq & Yemen.
