Iran puts satellite into orbit: state TV - Yahoo! News

TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran has successfully launched a second domestically built satellite into orbit, Iran's Arabic language al-Alam television reported Wednesday.

"Iran launched a domestically built rocket and the Rasad 1 (satellite) has been put into orbit," al-Alam reported.

In February 2009, Iran launched its first domestically-built satellite, OMID.

The United States and its allies fear Iran is seeking to build nuclear bombs and are concerned that the long-range ballistic technology used to put satellites into orbit can also be used to launch warheads.

Iran says its nuclear program is solely to generate electricity.

The Rasad 1 (Observation) satellite will be used for transmitting images and weather forecasts, TV reported.

Well done guys ... Hats off to you.

^A 2nd-stage-augmented Shahaab-3 was used. It was named Safir-e-Omid (ambassador of hope) after the first sat Omid (hope) it carried.

BTW the Rasad was meant to be launched Feb or April.

Not entirely true. But the first stage is very similar to Shahaab-3 but not the same thing. The same technology perhaps. Yes they are late in launching it by some 5 months. But atleast they did it. South Koreans could not do it, neither could Brazilians.

which missile was used for this launch ? i wonder why we can not use shaheen-2 some purpose ?

Shaheen-2 can not be used to launch a satellite as it is not really a satellite launcher it is a medium range ballistic missile. The technology is the same though. Then reason why not, is because of funding. While Iranian space agency is getting over 500 million dollars per year in budget, SUPARCO gets just 80 million dollars. Indians have even a bigger budget.
