Washington(CNN)Intelligence showing that Iran is likely moving short-range ballistic missiles aboard boats in the Persian Gulf was one of the critical reasons the US decided to move an aircraft carrier strike group and B-52 bombers into the region, according to several US officials with direct knowledge of the situation.

The concerns over the movement of the missiles was one of multiple threads of intelligence from various sources that led the US to believe Iran had a capability and intention to launch strikes against US targets.

On Tuesday US Central Command spokesperson Capt. Bill Urban said they had seen "indications that Iranian and Iranian proxy forces were making preparations to possibly attack US forces in the region."

'Specific, credible' Iran threat against US forces triggered carrier deployment, sources say

It's not clear if the Iran could launch the missiles from the boats or if they are transporting them to be used by Iranian forces on land.

The Pentagon is considering sending additional firepower to the region including anti-missile defense systems, the officials said.

The US could send Patriot missile batteries back to the region months after the US had brought some back home. No final decision on additional deployments have been made but the officials made clear if the Iranians were to pull back, the batteries might not be needed.

The Pentagon currently believes Iran's actions could put US and coalition forces at risk in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar. US military and intelligence officials are monitoring the movement of the Iranian missiles around the clock but have yet to see a pullback.

The new maritime threat is also causing concern that Iranian-backed forces in Yemen could also move to threaten transit in the Red Sea. The US is not ruling out the possibility that Iran will strike US troop locations in Iraq and Syria, although Iran has been an ongoing threat there for some time.

The US strategy has been to make very public announcements about the carrier and bombers in hope of deterring Iran from any action.

. . .
The US isn't even trying to put an effort on selling their fairy tales to the world, Now they just make shit up in their MSM.

. . . . . .
So they are moving cruise missiles inside their territory near the waters, nothing surprising and nothing to make a fuss about considering US military threats are being taken seriously by them.

Their claims next to their threats & president are joke that just amuse simpletons ...

It's not clear if the Iran could launch the missiles from the boats
Their calculations on everything has failed from NK to Venezuela esp regarding Iran ... max pressure, threats of war and violating all international norms and laws has got them no where .. what has remained for them except playing with routine AC missions in Persian gulf??

Agreed. But as your Eastern brother, I fear that they will indulge in limited strikes on your infrastructure (to which you will not retaliate because obviously Iran does not want open war against the US, Israel and their Gulf allies simultaneously), increased sanctions, a more hardcore cyber war, etc.

This is why I believe nukes are such an important and powerful deterrent for any State wanting to play on the global or regional stage, as Iran does.

First they will not, these huffing and puffing are just their to augment their financial and economical sanctions warfare against Iranian people in order to create a rift amongst our society and elites in order to make them to choose btw unreal war-sanctions or accepting the american 12 conditions ... well the american administration unlawful policy & their record towards Iran nuclear deal (despite Iran fully compliance) or other international regulations and agreements or UNSCRs has made Iranian united in one thing that their government stance toward the usa has been always right and talks with these people is useless and bring no good ... so as far as Iranian people have the gift of knowing their enemy and are united the usa can not do a damn thing. that's why the usa one moment talks about war and in the next minute asks for negotiation .. they were thinking max pressure would bring Iran to the table and they can have their desire deal which is not gonna happen ... so they have no second plan esp as we getting close to american presidential election in the next year any stupid move by them could bring Trump down and give other candidates a better chance something Trump doesn't like.
Second Iran has no other option but to respond to any threat/strike in the same level.
Nuke would limit Iran options to respond.
