BEIRUT – Iran has attacked rebels in northwest Syria with explosive-laden unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that fly into their targets, according to rebels.

A commander in the Islamist Ahrar al-Sham group told Al-Souria Net that “kamikaze drones thought to be [of] Iranian [origin] were used [on Monday to strike] Syrian opposition military bases in rural Idlib, causing extensive material damage at the targeted location.”

“Five aircrafts loaded with explosives targeted an Ahrar al-Sham base in the town of Ma'ar Shimmareen [near] Idlib province’s Ma’aret Nuaman,” Hassan Abu Hamid claimed.

“The destructive force of the plane was equal to the destructive force of an 82 mm mortar round, but had a higher fragmentation rate,” he explained.

Abu Hamid noted that the UAVs usually record footage of the target area and strike when it has been identified.

“It is difficult to see [these] planes because their low noise and small size, which makes the chances of shooting them [down] very slim.”

These planes are not about high destructive power. They are all about loitering over the destination and when you have detected the high profile target then order the plane to eliminate them . they don't need too much destruction but they need to be precise .

Please can anyone tell the name of the drone being used ? Has it ever been made public before by Iran?

I just don't understand the logic behind this. Is it price or is it precision or what? If it is Raad-85 as shown in the youtube then its is not small and if it is not small why couldn't a precision missile that locks on the target do the job? Is it price wise or is it the fact that Iran Sadid missiles (Hellfire equivalent) are not capable to do the job as a remotely guided drone? If it was the size of a quad copter made of cheap plastic and a cheap hovering mechanism it was understandable but this is a complete UCV with front side filled with explosives! Just doesn't make sense! It is more liek a desperate attempt rather than a strategic weapon!

Here is one: Raad 85 (UAV) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Its pictures: Análisis Militares: Irán, el UAV kamikaze Ra'ad 85

But no one can say for sure. Since the report is from the rebel side and they are experiencing hits by something which is guided and is small with a fragmentation warhead. If it is really a drone then it must be a smaller one. Something like a version of this: Yasir (UAV) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And where would the contrast lock technology or semi-active laser lock technology come from? It is not about the price. It is about technology.

A drone that would be capable of carrying say 4 or 6 small missiles in 100-150 pound weight range and has a decent range and loiter time would not be certainly small and would need a proper runway to take off and land. This would mean, the take off and landing area would be faraway from the actual battle, which would mean you would need high data rate secured satellite links.

So now you have expanded to several sets of technologies: Contrast lock / semi active laser / millimeter wave radar and satellites, and SLV's and .....

Even countries like Russia or China are still in learning stages when it comes to these technologies. Expecting Iran to somehow magically solve these technical problems is in my humble opinion not realistic.

Brimstone missile has a CEP of less than a meter. Alot of work has gone to that. About 10 years. And that also in a country that has several centuries of experience in weapon development and has been a heartland of science and technology with strong technical cooperation with the rest of the 'civilized' world. I do not know when Iran started its program to develop Sadid, but regardless, it is going to take a long time for these programs to bear fruit. And that is if they don't cut the funding in middle of it.

As far as I remember you guys were crying & yelling, when KSA bombed Houthi Rebels.
This is different!
1st- KSA bombed everyone indiscriminately. Basically the barbarians the KSA are, bombed infrastructure, schools, hospitals, population areas, women, children ... everyone.
2nd- KSA claims it came because Houthis were Iran backed. Iran is there with elite force in small scale to assist a government who has invited to face a mercenary force form abroad not entirely locals like Houthi's. So did Russia.
3rd- If this is true then it shows they are picking targets which is not what KSA does in mass killing wedding parties and families all over Yemen.
4th- Iran forces wherever they go their first priority is to have locals with them whether Sunni or Shia. That is wahat Hamedani was doing with 100K Basij type force. At first Syria Armed forces where skeptical but now they believe in force multiplier effects of such approach. This is also contrary to what KSA does by having Sudanies and other merceneries fight for him in Yemen without local build up.

Obviously a KSA citizen whom influenced by the corrupt ideology and corrupt monarchy does not understand the difference. When talking to the backward ideology one should know not use words like people, indigenous, will, loyal, decency, culture, humanity, human , passion, ... and many other words as it is not in their Wahhabi vocabulary.

Now shut the F.. up and go back to your cave!

When replying me first try to understand what the question is!

The question is if! and if! A system is capable to carry a bomb then it may be able to carry a sadid as well and if so why not a UCAV with one Sadid (not the scenario you start building and answering yourself) can not do the job and come back.

When there is an optical lock and there is a man behind the wheel and if the same man is capable of landing and exploding the UCAV (as in suicide drone) then the same man is capable of precision guiding an optical or manual locked missile or projectile and bring back the drone! with the same size of Radd-85. If it is Raad-85 size then it is not logical as I said!

That's Pretty long $hit of justifications .... Never mind Houthis are going to hell anyway.

That is it that is your response! Is it more words that your type don't understand do I need to write it simpler or simply put dots! It seems it makes no difference to your intellectual capacity! Your time in KSA is numbered! I am counting backwards 3 years from now or 5 years as IMF says! Continue your shit in the region with your Sisi Jubair and it will be made to tick faster! 3 years ... tomorrow 2 years and 355 days ... 354 ... Go to Hell Wahhabi terrorist wanna be!
