What's new

INS Betwa that toppled yesterday, will be made battle ready and operational: Indian Navy

.
That would be one heck of a job if Indian Navy is actually able to put this thing into action. But they have made a claim and I hope they'd stand by it - and we are all eyes and ears to know what they pull off out of this fail.

On a side note, unless India decides to cut this vessel in parts and then join them again, I don't see this thing getting straight.

operational? That things a write-off....the frame's done, pretty sure the electronics on board wouldnt take too well to sea-water either
No major or significant damage to hull noticed.
Water has affected less than 20% of ship.
It couldn't enter the vital electrical units.
Only 10% of weapons were on-board.

An Australian company with a very powerful crane has been contacted among several others for lifting the ship.

Navy adds that the repairs will be completed within the time period of the medium refit which INS Betwa was undergoing since April 2016.
So expect INS Betwa to join fleet by April 2017.

.
More good news: scan by ultrasound machine shows no major damage to part of hull which touched ground.
No weaponry were on-board other than some 76.2 mm shells.
Only areas requiring repairs are engine room and replacement of mast and one radar.

one good news after another

Hold your horses fella. IN engineers will know better. Let them upright the ship, make a damage assesments.

I doubt it.... navy is trying to save face..
Betwa got lucky it fell on soft and partially flooded ground so no major damage to hull and its electrical compartment didn't submerge.
So anyways it was already on a medium refit beginning April 2016, so it will be ready within that timeframe.

While final assessment report will be submitted tmrw, initial assessment shows no major or beyond economic repair damage.
The main mast will have to be replaced though.

.
Does that mean Indian Navy will gain an operational target ship?

we dont know whether navy is telling the truth... I hope navy is telling the truth but they might not be upfront about serious damage and tell us bad news later in small batches.. :)

Nope.
It will regain/retain an operational anti shipping guided missile frigate.

True, but given the situation and the fact that the frigate tilted slowly and did not slam to the ground means that major structural damage is unlikely.

I have zero knowledge on this matter.. so guess take your word for it...

Exactly.....

No crane big enough to lift tilted warship, foreign help sought.

MUMBAI: A day after warshipINS Betwa toppled at the naval dockyard+ here, killing two and injuring 22, the Indian Navyhas yet to figure out a way to lift the ship and has called in foreign experts.

The Navy+ does not have a crane that can lift the 3,850-tonne frigate, which is floating in the dry dock since she keeled over on Monday. The cranes available with the Navy can lift only 100 tonne. Mazgaon Dock has a crane with a capacity of 300 tonne, but it can't be shifted out of the premises.

The salvage operation, which a time-consuming process, will cost a few crores of rupees , said a naval officer.

Indian Navy's spokesperson in Mumbai, Commander Rahul Sinha, said the chief of naval staff Admiral Sunil Lanba visited the naval dockyard on Tuesday and was briefed about the incident. "He also met the injured sailors in naval hospital INHS Asvini.

A few specialists are likely to reach Mumbai on December 7 and are likely to complete the initial assessment within two days.
