BBC News - Indonesia city to ban women 'straddling motorbikes'

A city in the Indonesian province of Aceh which follows Sharia has ordered female passengers not to straddle motorbikes behind male drivers.

Suaidi Yahya, mayor of Lhokseumawe, says it aims to save people's "morals and behaviours".

Leaflets have been sent out to government offices and residents to inform them about the regulation.

Aceh is the only Indonesian province that follows Sharia.

Under the new regulation, the mayor says that women passengers are only allowed to sit "side-saddle" because straddling the bike seat violates Islamic values.

"When you see a woman straddle, she looks like a man. But if she sits side-saddle, she looks like a woman," Suaidi said.

He added that passengers who sat side-saddle rarely fell off.

The local government will be evaluating the regulation in a month, after which it could turn into a by-law, he added.

When asked if women who did not follow the rule would be punished, Suaidi said: "Once it has become a by-law, automatically there will be sanctions."

The regulation has been met with criticism from well-known Muslim activists like Ulil Abshar Abdalla, who is based in the capital, Jakarta.

"How to ride a motorbike is not regulated in Sharia. There is no mention of it in the Koran or Hadiths," he said on his Twitter account, referring to the second most sacred text in Islam after the Koran.

"In a democratic country, what is claimed to be Sharia must be assessed by the public's common sense if the government aims to turn the regulation into law."

BS ......Safety has nothing to do with it...real problem why this is proposed has been highlighted in red:lol:
and they preach us of moral values and equality :P

That province is Aceh, the one and only province in Indonesia that granted a special authority to practice Sharia law. There are some "special regions" in Indonesia which had been granted special acknowledgement to run the region based on their own law, either political like Kingdom of Jogjakarta and Kingdom of Surakarta, economical like Jakarta and Batam, and Religious like Aceh. Aceh was rebelling Indonesian government in order to establish Sharia law in their home province for 3 decades until finally Indonesian government made an exception for Aceh to use their own law, as long as those laws are not crossing the constitution. Normally, people who committed crime in Aceh will be treated with Sharia law engagement by their own special law tribunal, using special adjudicators, and will be punished by their own special police department under the special authority given by the head of national police.

In this case, many of "normal things" in Indonesia like tight pants, tank tops, relatively open dresses, or even people's behavior like walking down the streets with their girlfriends, are banned in Aceh. Indonesian government will have to respect that law, otherwise, there will be rebellion again. You know these Islamic fundamentalists will do everything for that kind of thing right?

support separation of church and state

well said, but the reality is far from this....
Look at 58 OIC countries and tell me how many countries have done that...
Its not permissible in Islam, where every adherent should follow the command of allah and his prophet.
Allah is a head of state and above all...

According to the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community's understanding of Islam, Islamic principles state that the politics of government should be separate from the doctrine of religion. Special preference should not be given to a Muslim over a non-Muslim

Thats why this sect of Ahmadiyas is always at blame.....

In Indonesia, this is a different case, this is not whether Muslims should follow Sharia or not, it is more like "preventing rebellion" from people of Aceh province whom demanded a special grant to use Sharia law since decades ago.

Preventing rebellion vs Sharia?
How...

Quran does not permit that.

For 'true muslim' Quran is more important than the 'constitution'.

Correct...
Khuda parsati pehle, fir watan parasti....

Yes... no doubt... only if you or any one else, would have read the book.

Can you tell us why hindus do all the terrible things to women?

For Ignorants:
In Indonesia, women ride light scooters.. not the kind of motor cycles we have in Pakistan.
There are no issues with women riding scooters, its comfortable enough.

in other words you are agreeing that this indonesian move was terrible, otherwise this thought was not possible within yr mind.

its about sharia n indonesia....stay on topic

Yes... no doubt... only if you or any one else, would have read the book.

So you agree that 'Quran' is more important than the 'constitution' ...so what is the problem ? Why do I have to read the book ? ...even without claiming to have read it, I am saying the same thing.

O.K. same people who sing song of their country their rules in case of either Saudi arabia or countries like germany , belgium , France and poland are ridiculing it here .
