Indira Gandhi’s grandson faces charges for ‘hate speech’

NEW DELHI: The grandson of former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi faced criminal charges on Tuesday for allegedly inciting violence against Muslims during a campaign for next month’s general elections.

Varun Gandhi reportedly told a rally that his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would ‘cut the heads of Muslims’. According to footage aired by the NDTV news channel, Varun also said Muslims ‘have scary names like Karimullah, Mazullah’ and that ‘if you meet them at night you will be scared’.

But the BJP tried to distance itself from the remarks and a BJP official said party leaders were debating whether to punish Varun, AP reported. “All the Hindus stay on this side and send the others to Pakistan,” Varun had said in the video. “This is the Lotus hand,” he said, referring to the BJP’s symbol. “It will cut their throats after elections.”

India’s Election Commission said it had reviewed the BJP leader’s speeches and ordered he face “criminal charges” in Uttar Pradesh, where he had made the speeches. Election commission official Rajesh Malhotra said an official warning would also be issued to the BJP.

In his defence, Varun said the recordings had been tampered with. “The voice is not mine,” he told the CNN-IBN news channel. If convicted, Varun could be disqualified from running for office and imprisoned for up to five years.

We will not see them now for sure. They are the hypocrites or opportunists who always keep a measurable distance from the truth. But I can assure, those people will definitely be the first victims. I can see the past three decades have changed India's psyche, as Hindu fanaticism from the beginning of the 90s has been rising highly making the younger generation more communal than the older generation. Varun is the reflection of this mentality. So I laugh at those people from india and even from Pakistan who have a utopian dream of Hindu-Muslim bhai bhai just like the Neheruvian Hindi-Chini bhai bhai. Zaid Hamid has rightly remarked when Muslims will be slaughtered, then it will not come into consideration whether a Muslim is really a good Muslim or a bad Muslim, Muslims will be indiscriminately slaughtered just because the Muslim reads 'Kalma', and just because the Muslim is a Muslim. I have seen some forum members on both sides, i will not mention their names as per forum rules, but I want to see their shocking reaction after the slaughter. Pity to them. In India, anti muslim remarks can give you the votes. Thats why Modi is popular, why Advani is popular. BJP as an election manifesto can have many issues like poverty , nationalisation etc but its core value remains strident Hindutva. Unlike religious parties in Pakistan, which promote Islam, BJP does not promote Hinduism rather , anti Islam.

I have seen that with increasing affluency and wealth, Indian seems more retrograde in their dealings with minorities. rather than be more liberal, they are increasing becoming more insular. BJP will form govt this time around. Advani will be the PM . The future leaders will be Modi and Gandhi. There is no place for liberals like Atal anymore !!

I am surprised with this comment. Its the Iron Curtain which maintained the illusion that everything is hunky-dory. On the second thought....on which counts USSR was strong? They have surely achieved a lot during communism...but what abt the gnrl ppl.....were they happy\satisfied...?

Muradk....as for the Maulvi who told Musharaf to take hike...U missed how quickly system responded. And that maulvi has shown faith in system. This is the soundness of the system that even BJP distanced himself from these statements.

Since 1947 muslim population has increased 30% in India while Hindu Population has more the halved in Pakistan........ And we are judged by Pakistan for our secular character....hmmm.....interesting....

Which style I choose for my post is completely of my own decision and you are not the one who can comment on the style, therefore, you must re-consider your jurisdiction to make such comments, first of all. Secondly, who is a kid and who is what, neither of us know that, so better to keep silence rather than making such derogatory remarks.

Now the point is that as you posted somewhere else Muslims are increasing in number since 1947, well, is that any issue for you? Are you scared of that? Or should the Muslim remain as a minority for ever?
