Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) News and Discussions

Gone through all the posts .. learned a lot .. thanks connanxlrc1000

Our Carrier's are only as good as the planes they carry ,

Mig-29K
Tejas-N
N-MRCA
NFGA

E2D hawk eye

ASW Helicopters

UAV's ?
UCAV's !

and their battle groups that escort them.
we should get a little info on that as well.

Good, awsome,..!
sir, what do u think of a carrier specialy 4 ucav & asw. it will b small & leathal. good futur option.

one thing i would like to bring to the notice is that we are lagging a lot in supporting ships in the battle group...we dont have nuclear attack submarines which is very important for battle group...plus AEWC like E-2D is long delayed...

which LR-SAMS are going to b equipped on IAC-1

and by the way i will consider operating 3 AC fleets a foolishness at a time when our submarine fleet is in a depleting condition

an AC require an entire flotilla with itself for its protection which includes submarine also,if we engage most of our submarine in defensive roles, then what is left for us for offensive actions

Good source of info. Thanks for sharing.

Which SAM is going to be fitted on Vikramadutya? VL-Shtil? Isn't it?

CIWS is Barak-1 or Kashtan-M? Most probably Kashtan-M!

Goa Shipyard Ltd begins work on SBTF for Naval fighter aircrafts idrw.org

After the steel cutting ceremony held by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) last month in its yard ,GSL has started work on INS HANSA Naval base also , Cmde A. S. Baghel, Chief Staff Officer (Air), Goa Naval Area who was present in steel cutting ceremony did the honors , The GSL has been appointed the main co-coordinator for this project and will also be purchasing ABA Ship building steel , shore-based test facility (SBTF) will be a exact replica of IAC (Indigenous aircraft carrier)-1 which has been under construction at Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) , GSL is working in coordination with CSL and ADA (Aeronautical Development Agency), while civil work will be carried out by a pune based DRDO lab R&DE (E) .

SBTF will be used to simulate an aircraft carrier for full-fledged flight testing of ship-borne attack aircraft as well as for training pilots. development is mostly related to test Naval Tejas in development by ADA while Mig-29k and sea harrier pilots will also be doing practice on this runway when fully operational , SBTF will also be able to operate any aircraft which Indian navy may operate in future that includes Naval Pak-Fa .

shore-based test facility (SBTF) project will be first such facility in South Asia and the third in the world.Project will be completed by end of 2012 ,while first flight of Naval Tejas is expected by end of 2010 and roll out ceremony will be held in July , after initial testing Naval Tejas will be based in Goa for a long Haul .

MIG BUZZ AT INS HANSA

Our local contributor from Goa has informed us that Mig-29k has been carrying out routine flight from the base , and are mostly seen in pairs , as per our informant Mig-29k mostly have sorties on Tuesday and Wednesday and its a great sight to watch them taking off from the surrounding road to the INS HANSA , Base is also home to Sea harriers and Kiran mk2 trainer jet and the best view could be from Bogmallo beach which is very close to the base and also is home to India’s only naval museum .

well we can only go for nuclear if IN and MOD goes for it for now we will be going for conventional powered carriers

there is no need for IAC-4..instead we should ask the shipyards to start delivering submarines without delays..India needs atleast 25-30 subs including 10 SSNs and 3-4 SSBNs..

Indian Aircraft Carrier (Project-71)

Future Commissions: Vikrant; Laid Down - 28 Feb 2009, Launch - Feb 2011, Commissioning - 2015.
............................Viraat; Laid Down - 2011, Launch - 2014, Commissioning - 2017.

Displacement: 37,500 tons - standard displacement.
....................40,000+ tons - full load (estimation).

Dimensions: Length - 260 meters (was 252 meters).
.................Beam - 60 meters (was 58 meters).
.................Draught - 8.4 meters.
.................Depth - 25.6 meters.
.................Flight Deck - 2.5 acres.

Main Machinery: The vessel will be powered by four General Electric LM 2500 gas turbines, generating a total power of 80 MW (~ 120,000 hp).

Maximum Speed: 28 knots.

Logistic Endurance: 45 days.

Maximum Range: 7500 nautical miles @ 18 knots.

Complement: 1200 - 1500 personnel (incl. 160 officers).

SELF PROTECTION CAPABILITIES

The most recent design has SAMs in VLS (Vertical Launch System) cells mounted on sponsons on either beam - the port side is to the aft of the ship while the starboard sponson is to the fore of the ship. Four OTO Melera 76mm Super Rapid dual purpose guns are mounted symmetrically on sponsons along the flight deck - two on the fore section and two at the fantail (stern). Preliminary sensor fit appears to show a Top Plate 3D radar on the mainmast and a large 3D radar antennae of a yet undetermined type, along with the usual SATCOM and Electronic Warfare antennae. CSL will use a modular approach to reduce construction time from nine years to around six to eight years. Vice Admiral Yashwant Prasad, Vice Chief of Naval Staff, stated that the delay in the construction of the vessel was caused by the sharp rise in the price of Russian steel and thus warship-grade steel was indigenously-developed by DRDO (Defence Research & Development Organisation) and SAIL (Steel Authority of India Limited). Stating that this steel was a major breakthrough, Vice Admiral Prasad also mentioned that it will be used to build all future warships of the Indian Navy.

Capabilities

Indian Aircraft Carrier (IAC) Project 71 - a knol by Vijainder K Thakur

The 260 meters long and 60 meter whide ship will have a speed of 28 knots and an endurance of 8,000 nautical miles.

The carrier will field long-range surface-to-air missile systems with a multi-function radar, a close-in weapon system, the most modern C/D band early air-warning radar and the V/UHF tactical air-navigational and direction finding systems.

It will have jamming capabilities over the expected electromagnetic (EM) environment, along with carrier control approach radars to aid air operations. Integration of all weapon systems onboard will be through an indigenous combat management system.

The ship’s integration with the Navy’s network-centric operations will provide for force multiplication.

Aircraft Complement

The Navy plans to equip IAC-1 with a mix of MiG-29K / LCA Naval Variant currently under development at ADA.

However, in view of the slow progress of the LCA project, the service is actively looking at alternatives.

It has ssued an RFI (request for information) to several global aviation majors, including American Boeing, French Dassault and Russian MiG companies, for ‘an alternate deck-based aircraft’ in November.

‘‘Information is being sought to acquire over 40 fighters for the 40,000-tonne IAC-1 (indigenous aircraft carrier), being built at the Cochin shipyard and expected to roll out by 2014-2015 now, and IAC-2, which will follow later,’’

Thanks connanxlrc1000 for the compilation..

May I ask the senior members that what is the LRSAM that is going to be used in our IACs, or even Vikramaditya?, Shtil I guess has a range of 30 Kms....Can some one clarify please?
