What's new

India's porverty reduced from 269 million to 172 million : World Bank

No, you are not getting it. When the world band official global poverty line was $1.25, India gov was using Rs 32 for urban, Rs 26 for rural as official Indian poverty line, as it considered Rs 32 for urban was equivalent to $1.25. It has been like this since 2012. What I want to know is what are the numbers in terms Rs used this time.
you are not getting it ...when you have numbers based on higher base line from World Bank...why worry of lower base line....

These low IQ Indians dont understand what you want. Let me explain vedic maths to you.

Eventhough its 1.9 USD India is now using Rs. 130. But $1.9 is around Rs 140

World Bank estimates show fall in India’s poverty rate - The Hindu

And then people abuse me because I say its all fake numbers.
use burnol...

I dont know much about madarsa math
where INR has to be 73.68 to 1 USD to get $1.9 = Rs 140

but in simple math
1 USD = 64.80 INR (as per Oct 11, 2015)
1.9 USD = 123.1 INR

My friend, India gov is using PPP dollar, so it is not Rs 123.

The 5-6 buildings alone in this clip would be equal to Pakistan's entire Navy budget :rofl:

PS: The Antilla in the middle is presently valued at 1.6 billion USD (built at 1.3 billion usd) and is meant for Ambani's family only.

Is this supposed to be something that the Indian members should be proud of , in the thread that is discussing poverty?

Come to that other thread regarding CAD.

And no. nothing to be proud of. We are still a rural, backwards country. But atleast we have started to realise our potential.

If decreasing the number of poor from 47% in 1991 to 10% in 2015 is not progress then I don't know what you Chinese would call progress.

Do you Expect India to suddenly convert into USA in 5 years? Your own country took 60 years to be where it is today.

Indiasn slow red tape democracy and our general social issues like corruption means we would take atleast another 20-25 years to reach a position of being a real global power. (Not Superpower, mind you....)

See, I have just asked one question, and for all the Indian members here, nobody can't give me a straight answer. If there is not substantial increase on the living standard of those poor people, all these decreasing in number of poor people is just a number game. It is not worth cheering for. It shows at least one thing, how much your lot really know how Indian poor people live.

Lol...A lot of butt hurt here..

Indians tend to live in families...123 rs for every person in a family means a substantial earning per day for the household.

I know you are using PPP, so what you stated (Rs 123 as the poverty line) in your previous post was not correct. Last year, Indian gov was using Rs 33.2 for urban poverty line. Do you have current figure? Rs 123 is only enough for one meal in an inexpensive restaurant, that is far from Western middle class equivalent though.

Great link, by the way, very informative.

It was correct because we never claimed to it was not based on PPP equivalent.

Meals actually are available for less than Rs.123 in restaurants, but that was only one measure. Rent index is just 6% of what is over there and on the whole consumer price index with rent is just 16%. It is much less if you consider cost of transport, entertainment, etc. etc.

39% Americans make less than $20K a year, does that mean US has 39% poverty? Even greater if taken accounting dependents.
50% Of American Workers Make Less Than $28,031 A Year | Zero Hedge

At Rs. 123 nominal per person for a family of five (usual Indian household size), family income per year would be $21118 PPP equivalent.

So nothing has changed, India is still the shitty piss poor slum filled country? As i thought. Carry on the mental masturbation.

Take it easy on this agenda bro, poverty is a human suffering. It's sadly true that nothing has changed on the ground.

But the good news is if new method (MMRP, showing 12.4%) is finally adopted by WB, the number does look better than the currently used method (URP, showing 21.2%)!

I have a question about ground situation....can someone tell me how these figures are being calculated because if a survey is done in India by government or non-governmental agency people never disclose their real earnings....because they fear that they will loose out on government grants, government subsidies etc., etc....

If these people are using these kind of surveys these percentages can never be accurate......

Still miles to go. Some areas from Orissa, Bihar, Bundelkhand ( UP ) and Vidarbha (Maharshtra ) need urgent special assistance.

You are still talking about Rs 123, even you know your Government is using PPP dollar to calculate the poverty line, which in 2014 was Rs 33 for rural, and Rs 47 for urban, an increase from 26, 32 respectively in 2011-2012.

Good question! You have to read through the report from "The Rangarajan committee" which made the recommendation for the poverty line. I think they arrived the number based on the food calories per day per person.

I am talking about Rs. 123 nominal enough for a middle class equivalent. I did not specify which middle class level; lower, middle, or higher.

Even the govt is talking of PPP equivalents only as far as poverty figures are concerned. Next, you need to understand India is typically a cash economy and about most basic consumer services transactions are not billed and hence does not figure in the official calculations.
