India’s Mars mission, poverty and closet racism

India has now successfully launched its mission to Mars. The mission was achieved at an extraordinary low price tag of Rs 450 crore ($74 million) – 1/10 of what a similar mission would cost NASA or ESA. If this successfully reaches Mars, India will be the first country to have the Mars mission succeed on the first try.

The Provocation

Just as quickly as the rocket sped off, the Western journalists who marvelled at the moon walk in their childhood started engaging Indians in an unnecessary provocation. These are not coming from cheap tabloids, but reputed media houses. It is not the criticism that rankles, but how crudely they are hitting below the belt.

This author chose to include poverty right in the headline: India Mars Mission to Launch Amidst Overwhelming Poverty

What a refreshing headline! Not even poverty. It has to be “overwhelming poverty”. Who are we to launch into space? Should we not ask our British colonial masters before doing anything?

Apparently the other countries engaging in scientific research face no poverty. Apparently, space has something to do with poverty. Apparently, it is between funding ISRO and solving poverty. You cannot do both. No sir, no. Next time, when you write about something that Britain did well, sure to remember to randomly incorporate the poverty of Birmingham and the riots of London into the title.

“England wins 10 Olympic golds amidst all the poverty”

“NASA begins its moon mission despite failing to manage hurricane relief”

“European Space Agency launches a satellite despite the inability to control religious riots in Paris and Tottenham, London”

This CNN author didn’t even pretend to hide the racist idea:

Is India’s Mars mission the latest escalation in Asia’s space race?

For a country like Australia, the space aspirations are extremely pragmatically driven. On the other hand, a country like Malaysia is intent on putting astronauts in space — that’s very prestige-oriented.

Apparently, brown people’s ambitions to reach space is not pragmatic enough. Apparently, the $75 million spent on the Mars mission is the only thing that keeps us from building toilets.

This gentleman at Guardian makes a thinly-veiled threat:

ISRO to launch India’s first spacecraft to Mars

Critics of Britain’s aid programme in the country have also been angered by the mission. The UK gives India around £300m each year.

Britain threatens to pull its aid. This is ghastly. What would India do without all these do-gooder British aid? The Indian economy of £1 trillion was badly depending on these £300 million that come with no strings attached. We are an ungrateful bunch, aren’t we? We are supposed to surrender our national priorities and research work and listen to our ex-colonial masters for a paltry £300 million.

This Economist article is more subtle and even more racist:

How can poor countries afford space programmes?

What if the 16,000 scientists and engineers now working on space development were deployed instead to fix rotten sanitation?
Someone from Oxford wants to know why don’t we all Indians work on toilets and potty research?

If this author lived at the time of Renaissance, she/he might have written:

Newton, Michelangelo and da Vinci are wasting time instead of building toilets

Poverty should indeed be an excuse to postpone great achievements. Right?

Ok I can understand why west is ranting about us
Even Chinese
But why are our Brown people are ranting
Pakistanis & Some BD wale

Achivements are only for West & East Asians
We South Asians have existed for thousands of years
South Asia ko sirf poverty ke saath associate karna kyu chaiye
Bake jaye baadh Mein
Pakistanio neih ka response sabse bura laga

Aur phir khete ho why are we South Asians Backward :hitwall:

slap!.....a tight one on face of so called top western journalist good job niti central

There is no doubt of hidden or even unconscious racism in the Western countries.

France was almost offended when we rejected their aid in the aftermath of the Tsunami. When GoI said we can take care of our own.

In contrast Chinese reporting has been far better - they have spoken mostly of opportunities, cooperation and peace in Space.

You will be attacked by your countryman for saying anything positive about China. China is India's #1 enemy and obsession. Only negative attacks are allowed here, just like Bharat Rakshak.

I agree western media do look down on and try to mock many projects and works being done in Africa or Asia however you cannot compare the poverty of India to that of the UK for example that is just a ridiculous comparison.

India has something like 800 million people in abject poverty and you cannot ignore this big problem, which should priority no1 instead of trying to prove a point by sending expensive electronics into outer space.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Our brightest minds leave our country because they cannot find work so we decide to give them a job, to unlock their potential so they don't go to a foreign country. On of the articles mentioned "What if the 16,000 scientists and engineers now working on space development were deployed instead to fix rotten sanitation?" Can a rocket scientist build a sewage system? The west looks down upon you just as they do. In fact, their political parties create commercials showing China as a dictatorship and her people as drones. Until we eclipse them they will always treat us like this.

East Asians are more respected among white people than South Asians, Africans, Latinos, Middle Easterners, etc.

The west considers East Asians the only people capable of challenging and surpassing the white man. Sorry to be so crude but the white man has even less respect for the brown man and the black man is the least respected by the white man.

Yes, the white man hate the yellow man, but we are higher up the ladder than the brown and black man.

Most of the non-western advanced economies that don't depend on natural resources are based in East Asia. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore (75% East Asian population).
Mainland China and North Korea are the only economies that don't have advanced economies. But that is due to ideological reasons.

No brown man country is rich and powerful with advanced technology like East Asian economies. Countries like Dubai and Qatar are just natural resource based countries and not developed due to technological achievement.

No country in Africa, Latin America and South Asia are rich.

This is why the yellow man is more respected overall than the brown man and the black man.

I support the Indian space program but I don't feel sorry for the Indians being mocked by western countries for having a space program.

At the end of the day, Indians are the only people in South Asia that openly behave like some sort of Western poodles, and I'm talking about the Indian people here and not their government. You guys deserves this treatment.

Our country doesn't have daily drone strikes. Our country does get paid billion in aid to fight their own brethren. Our country does not receive free jets for being a "good boy".

So is your pride based on that white people perceived East Asians as smarter than blacks, Hispanics, Indians, Africans but still below that of whites? If so, you need serious help.

I believe all races are equal. The differences is a geographical difference, not racial. Read up on "guns, germs and steel" and it will explain it very well.

You have no right to common on our people and their poverty. Nor do bragging loud mouth chinese have any right to tell us what our priority should be. We do what we want because we are free to do so and we enjoy our freedom. You can go suck on an rotten egg. Then again, that might be a delicacy for you !!

You go and worry about all those baby fetus being killed in china, about your people barbaric eating habbits and your occupation of tibet. Then we will decide if you have any right to speak on India. get it ?

Do you even know that you just described your own country when you narrated the above lines? We dont get paid to fight our enemies by the Western Govt, we dont receive weapons as Aid for accepting to accomplish their job. We dont have our doors open for Drone strikes and you still call us the western poodles of South Asia.
