What's new

India's First indigenous aircraft carrier to be launched this December.

.
dont think it will be operational any time before 2017 and INS Vishal before 2020.
there is a lot of work still pending. actually making it fully functional will take 2-3 years, then it will be tested for at least 2 years.

I doubt: Most of the components are tested on Destroyers and frigate India makes.. Indian navy is not like IAF, Many components are already operational...

Barrack 8 SAM will be operational by nest year on next Kolkata class destroyer... I am hopeful that by 2014, We can see INS Virat floating...

.
look most indians including me wants INS Virat to be floating by 2014. But that is just wishful thinking. Wiring and radar installation etc will take at least 2 years and sea trials will continue for 2 more years. ie we are looking at 2015-16 as year of induction. I dont think it can happen anytime before that.

Just having an aircraft carrier isn't enough. The Indian Navy's CBG (Carrier Battle Group) usually consists of two destroyers (usually of the Delhi Class, previously Kashins were used) and two or more frigates, (usually a combination of Brahmaputra, Talwar or Shivalik class) and one support ship and possibly a submarine. The question is, would this battle group be viable for sea control in the Indian Ocean or South China Sea?

Let's take a look at a typical US Navy CSG (Carrier Strike Group):

> A supercarrier, which is the centerpiece of the strike group and also serves as the flagship for the CSG Commander and his staff.

> A carrier air wing (CVW) typically consisting of up to nine squadrons including AWACs.

> One to two Aegis guided missile cruisers (CG), of the Ticonderoga class—a multi-mission surface combatant, equipped with BGM-109 Tomahawk missiles for long-range strike capability.

> A destroyer squadron (DESRON) commanded by a surface community captain (O-6) who commands the escort destroyers, with two to three guided missile destroyers (DDG), of the Arleigh Burke class—a multi-mission surface combatant, used primarily for anti-aircraft (AAW) and anti-submarine (ASW) warfare, but which also carries Tomahawk missiles for long-range strike capability.

> Two to three attack submarines, usually of the Los Angeles-class used to screen the strike group against hostile surface ships and submarines, but which also carry Tomahawk missiles for long-range strike capability.

> A combined ammunition, oiler and supply ship (AOE/AOR), usually Supply-class (T-AOE); provides logistic support.

India's CBGs just having a couple of destroyers and one or two frigates is a formality. Unless we are fully equipped on the lines of the American CSGs it would just be a charade to show the world we are a 'blue water' navy! So, do we have the wherewithal for a lethal and potent CBG? The jury is out on that one!

INS Vikrant will be in service in 2014 sea trials usually take 2-3 years don't castigate our indigenous ship building base

INS Vikrant will be in service in 2014

INS vishal will be in service in 2017

INS Vikrant by 2014 is almost confirmed.

But INS Vishal is doubtful by 2017. There is no news of any work started or going on. Even if start today, it will take 6-7+2 = 8-9 years i.e. 2020. There is no official confirmation yet on INS Vishal. We will only know may be after 1-2 years.

For INS Vishal, the general assumption seems to be that since it's a second carrier, the docks would already have crossed a learning curve and the production would be faster relative to IAC 1. But still, you're right. 2017 is still a little optimistic.

.
first the ship is launched into water, then the weapon integration and then finally the sea trial..
i too think it ll take between 2 - 4 yrs. (considering new product, 4 might be realistic)
but Indian navy will have their hands on from launching onward... i think.

it was when we were with the viraat.
hope it will change when the new lady steps in.

i think he is talking about INS Vishal but that will enter service sometime in 2017

That's not possible man. 2017 is a little too fast, even if we consider Navy's much more superior management and dedication compared to IAF and IA (these both are pitiable right now with their terrible sloppiness and top brass corruption, especially the Army). INS Vishal most likely would be ready only by 2020. But yeah, Vikrant II ought to be ready by 2014-15.

if it starts sea trials in 2015 it will be ready for service in 2017 but INS Vishal will be in service definitely be in service before 2020

Not Before 2020 , The Order for IAC-2 Will be Placed after Launch of IAC-1

Since, IAC -1 will be Launched in Dec , Order for IAC-2 Will be Placed By Next Year and Then Keel Will be Laid and Work On Hull Will Begin

IAC-2 Will be Larger Ship of Heavier Displacement and CATOBAR layout Most Probably , Its a Complicated Process with Heavy funding Nedeed

So May be By 2020 It will be Launched But It will be In service After this Decade , Even Navy Chief said ' That IAC-2 Is Long way Off'

.
by the way apart from US which all navys use the CATOBAR type of carrier?

Arent we a way too optimistic out here…I am not castigating anyone …Navy has been my favorite out of all three service arm…For a sea trial to happen you need to have an entire gamut of systems in place….I would love if IAC1 joins by 2014..however regardless of what MoD has told in parliament, construction of carrier, fitment of systems , testing of systems , etc will take time. 2 years of time to do all the above work doesn’t look to be practical. Take a clue from the parliamentary report that was presented on the delays that were encountered on P17A project. Similar delays will occur here also (even if we don’t wish so) ..i have my bets placed on 2016-2017 year frame….
