Why cant a geo-stat satellite provide real time input to the seeker of BMD missile?? Havent you heard Techsar is a SAR (Synthetic aperture Radar) Although for different purpose.

Havent you heard of Glonass at all?

Sir, Glonass is for providing guidance in navigation once you have the target coordinates not for target acquisition. Missile launch detection from space generally employs infrared sensors.

From global security: Missile Defense Infrared Sensors

Remote sensing of visual, ultraviolet, and infrared sources currently employ electro-optical detection systems. The detection systems are mounted on platforms supported by satellites, airplanes, ships or land based vehicles. The detection systems include an electro-optical or optical sensor, typically a telescope, for collecting photons representative of a target and a detector for converting these collected photons into electrons and hence an electronic current. This enables information to be gathered about the target.

Traditionally, strategic and tactical missile launch detection and tracking systems use infrared surveillance techniques employed by satellite sensors. The satellite sensors are required to view the whole earth at one time because the missiles could be launched from any location. It is necessary to determine where the missile is going and, from the trajectory, to find where the missile is likely to hit with a high probability of detection. For example, it is usually required to have a probability of detection of at least 99% and to avoid a false detection to a probability of less than once per month.

Congratulations to DRDO and all the Indians. :)

Thanks DRDO for insuring that India/Indians remain safe and have peaceful sleeps while enemy crawls over hot coals.

Congratulations to Yindoos, kafir, RAW, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims (including Shia, Ahamediya, Khoja, Bohra) and all other bhartis.

satellite and radar can't be replaced as both are needed in different level of ABM.......

Well, the person had said The radar would be replaced by Glonsas and GAGAN, It does not sound good that way, He could have just said it would be satellite guided, but that again left it blank, not worth a replay to him anyway... he dosent understand

Are you coming to say that the thing will be satellite guided?? As simple as that?

Actually Sir, satellites will be used for both. an early detection to allow boost phase interception and can also be used for guidance.

Dear, as of now we have GPS guided Missiles and also The INS, But both of these need Radars, So A satellite can Never Replace a Radar...Anyways I am in no form to debate, Iam drunk already

Guidance for BMD will be real time based upon Glonass input. Target acquisition and navigation too will be based on the same. Sir, I think you should visit "real" defense forums more instead of wasting your time in pseudo-defence-social-networking forums

Mate, some major confusion about missile guidance you have!

All over the world, the ABM missiles use either ARH or IIR seekers with mid course update from ground/sea based radars.

Also, for determining their location in 3D space most of them use RLG (ring laser gyro) based INS systems not GPS or glonass updates.

You are getting confused between A2G and SAM missiles.

With no cross checking party like in the case of Arjun and Tejas, DRDO is having field day(s) celebrating its unverified success. Who knows, may be they will even succeed in making the government induct it into strategic command. Because there are no testing department there, heck the department itself is nascent except for the nuclear experts.

I disagree strongly. We must get out of our typical doubting indian mentality!

As I said this test was difficult one!!! :woot: The target had anti0ABM capability and maneuvers.

Gimbaled Directional Warhead and HTK both are important as told by Dr. Saraswat.

2 minutes reaction time is excellent. So we can expect the launch of the interceptor with in 2.5 minutes of target launch.

Yes, DRDO is developing many new radars and they will be under one dedicated network.

2 minutes is toooooooooooo good.. so missile from western border has to be launched from border and can hit the targets in the border only.. those missiles cant penetrate major cities..

I think so far, all the successful tests are terminal intercept. DRDO is also developing boost phase intercept, i.e., height > 150 KM. Boost phase intercept will destroy the missile before it can deploy MIRV warheads or decoys. In any way the Indian BMD is multi-layered, so after the detection of a missile launch, the system will assign an interceptor for each layer that greatly increases the kill probability.

exactly MIRV can be handled only in boost phase or Mid-course.. while MIRV will happen only post Mid-course.. to achieve this we need an exceptional reaction time.. our BMD has to be in the place before the target enters post Mid-course...

One is a surveillance satellite and the other (GLONASS) is and will remain a navigation satellite. There is some difference there.
