Good decision
This one had severe technical issues and barely went to sea in past 2 years.

Which is why the next one (already on order) is undergoing extensive hull refit and modernization (unlike this one which only got a regular servicing before handed over to India).

MoD clears Rs 43,000 cr project to build 6 submarines while INS Chakra heads back to Russia

Chakra on its way back to Russia

Meanwhile, sources confirmed that the Chakra is on its way back and is being escorted by a Russian destroyer and a tanker. The lease for the Chakra got over earlier this year.

However, India and Russia had, in 2019, signed a $3 billion deal for the lease of a third SSN — Chakra III — which is likely to be in Indian waters by 2025 at the earliest.

While both India and Russia were trying to work out a possible extension of the Chakra II, it did not materialise because of cost and technical aspects. The Chakra is said to have had some major repairs over the last few years because of which sailing was limited.

The original INS Chakra initially came to India on a three-year lease that began in 1988. Chakra II was inducted in 2012.

The Chakras were leased to train crews for India’s own fleet of ballistic missile firing submarines (SSBNs). India’s first indigenously built SSBN, the INS Arihant, entered service in 2016. A second, the INS Arighat, was launched in 2017 and is expected to enter service soon.

Good news.
Hopefully Russians will speed it up by a year as that shipyard completed major modernization this year in Feb.

what seems to be the problem with this sub ? barely out in sea for 2 years means major challenges.

And were you privy to the operational matters of this naval ship?

Well Chakra was leased to train indian crew on Nuclear Submarine operations.
It has done its job
With Indian Navy already having two nuclear subs in INS Arihant and INS Arighat
And 2 more under construction.
We can use one sub for training while the other is on deterence patrol.

The only thing I am going to miss about INS Chakra will be its fire power
The Sub carried 24 Klub N cruise Missiles with 300 km range and 18 heavy weight Torpedoes.

This single sub could pack a greater punch than 3 Kilo class subs.

However the Forth coming Chakra III sub will be a welcome addition when it Joins the fleet in 2025.
Since it will have significant Indian equipment and will come with 450km range Brahmos Cruise missiles instead of Klub N.

The Chakra III will be a test bed for our own SSN program since all the tech developed for this sub will go in Our own Domestic SSNs

You guys are wasting your money seriously.
all their sub hulls are laying around in shipyards with shoddy progress on overhaul and repairs and either end up being scrapped or leased to customers like India.
lmao

Title is wrong.... Chakra is not lone nuclear submarine.... Indian Navy operating homemade Arihant and Arighat....

How much comparable Arihant or Arighat to Akula when it comes to fire power?

i Guess nuclear sub will be used against China. For Pakistan They may use diesels..

It's not like that..... It's for deterrence against any nuclear power attacking India....

For example if Pakistan decided to nuke India in that case a nuclear submarine with long range ballistic missiles in near waters is a great deterrence and may change it's mind to take war to nuclear level.....

Akula is an SSN while Arihant is an SSBN. It's quite a difference themselves

We dont know what goes behind strategic deals. 3B lease for 10 years looks like a lot for a SSN sub, when India builds one ssbn for around 1.2B each. But Russia is said to have helped India on the Nuke reactor stuff and these payments cover it too.

Though it's another matter altogether they have a lots of hulls sitting around

Indian military is very incompetent. Russian should stop renting their subs to India.

Yes the MIGHTY INDIAN SOLDIERS. LOL
