Indian Navy gets nod for 4 LPDs (Landing platform docks) acquisition

Huma Siddiqui

The Indian Navy is fast building up on its capabilities to sea lift and to launch assault on both water and land.

The central government has given approval for the acquisition of four landing platform docks (LPDs) to transport and land various elements of amphibious force to support ashore operations.

The amphibious warships, with helipads and capacity to move large number of troops and tanks or humanitarian aid, would be a match to the second largest combat ship in the Indian Navy’s flotilla INS Jalashwa (earlier USS Trenton). :yahoo::yahoo:

The approval for LPDs has been given by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) ‘Buy and Make Indian’ clause of the the Defence Procurement Policy (DPP-9).

“Under the ‘Buy and Make Indian’ category, the defence ministry would invite proposals from those Indian industries that have requisite financial and technical capabilities to enter into joint ventures and also absorb technology and undertake indigenous manufacture of the warships,” said chief of the Indian Navy Admiral Nirmal Verma.
:cheers::cheers:

The Navy has also invited information from the global vendors for supply of Landing Craft Mechanised (LCMs) that can be carried by amphibious warships to land troops or tanks during assaults on the coastline.
:taz: So far, the Indian Navy has four LCM’s which were bought during the acquisition of Jalashwa from the US.

The Navy is looking for LCMs which are able to carry 150 troops with gear or a T-90 or T-72 tank from ship to shore. Country's armed forces have been importing new technologies and ideas of warfare that demand coordinated operations of the Army, the Navy and the Air force.

Presently, the Navy’s amphibious armada comprise of one LPD (INS Jalashwa) and five Landing Ship Tanks – INS Kesari, INS Shardul, INS Airavat, INS Magar and INS Ghariyal. The LSTs can

carry as many as 10 main battle tanks, 11 combat trucks and 500 troops and has considerable range and endurance at sea.

Such large LPDs are offensive weapon. It will further increase Navy's capability by big margin. I think the final competition will be between Dokdo and Mistral.

.
Get Mistral PILIZZ...Which Helis will be operated from these..?

. . .
Guys LPD AND LHD ARE DIFFERENT MISTRAL AND DOKODO ARE LHD WHICH ARE MUCH LARGER AND ALSO SOMETIMES CALLED AS HELICOPTER CRUISER WHILE
LPD ARE USS SAN ANTANIO CLASS ETC.

.
Dokdo will be good for us bcoz it is cheaper than Mistral.
I think we are acquiring LPDs for the first time.
We should buy cheaper ones so that we can induct them in numbers.

. .
Ooops, thanks..... mistakes. We had discussed about them hats why. I think they should go for LHD rather than LPD. Actually Indian Navy has also expressed interest in the design of the Mistral type.

Yes..We had discussed this issue in other thread..Everyone had agreed that LHD is best suited..

Its good

Very soon we will have 3 Aircraft carrier ( INS Viraat, INS Vikramaditya, INS Vikrant 2) Group (CBG) and and each group need 2 Destroyer, 2 Frigates, 1 Minesweeper, 2 support ship (LPD and Fleet Tanker) and optional Submarine

So Guy India is going on its way to become Lord and Master of the Sea :chilli::victory::yahoo:

Yes sir..IN will be a formidable force..BUT only if our submarine fleet is taken care of..Going by the threat scenario we will face in future
we will need atleast 24 SSKs + 5 SSBNs + 6-7 SSNs..which seems like a dream now..

With LHD we can get the capabilities of both LPD as well as helicopter carriers. I think it also costs less.

Maybe we should discuss why IN seems not to agree with us? ;)

My guess would be, that they see the LPDs just as an additional capability to be used when a real need for landings occurs, like desaster relief in peace times, or in addition to our real aircraft carriers for landings in war times. That means otherwise they will not be used, which of course saves operational costs!

So is cost-effectiveness the key here?
